I would like one of my remote hosts to be able to control their stage remotely using their pc and the web controller. Is this possible or must they be on the same network?

You need to have a static IP or Dynamic DNS or be in the same network(VPN). Open vMIX ports in your router/firewall settings and give a link to Web Controller to your remote host.
