Producing live video with captions or subtitles is challenging in many ways. One problem is getting the text from the captioners into the production. This is sometimes further complicated if network firewalls are in the way. GETlivecap is a proposed standard for an open, simple, and effective method with which a live stream production can GET real-time captions from a captions server via HTTP requests. GETlivecap works fantastic with vMix, see a demo at The proposed standard is available at https://github.com/richardgatarski/GETlivecapCurrently there is only one captions provider (Swedish) that support GETlivecap. Now after its release I am approaching other providers, services as well as applications, in order to motivate them to include the GETlivecap delivery method. Hopefully other vMix users see the benefit, and will take similar actions. With respect to vMix we can currently only send open captions, that is the text lines are "burned" into the video stream using an overlay. To have closed captions (e.g. EIA-608 / CEA-708) is somewhat more complicated as that requires embedding the captions into the video stream. If I understand it correctly at least Youtube, Facebook and Twitch can display captions embedded in that way, although it is somewhat limited with respect to national characters. A few Feature Requests concercs this, for examples CEA-608 closed captions and SMPTE standard EIA-608 and EIA-708 Close Caption support.

Since last fall https://text-on-tap.live/ can also deliver in GETlivecap format. (sorry, forgot to post that here earlier). And if Text-On-Top is used you can have automatic translation)

Very interesting, I might suggest having option to send CC in a separate stream window that could be placed along side/below main video player or on different monitor as to not cover something of importance in main video stream

Has there been any progress on this or vmix supporting closed captions?

Not really AFAIK. I suspect doing closed captions in software is difficult or perhaps impossible.
