Update Thank You Martin, I look forward to trying this out!
https://forums.vmix.com/posts/m69824-vMix-23-Preview-Released#post69824

In most production environments the "stinger" is a transition between the program and preview bus. DSK's are always on top of these.
In vMix, the Stingers happen on private layers 5 and 6 on top of all video.

I have custom scripts that do stingers on overlay 1 just to get around this, with the "cut point" having to edit the script. But, I am wasting a DSK in the process.

It would be great if all 6 layers were accessible and the Stinger could be assigned to any of the 6.
In this case 1 and 2 could be the stingers and 2-6 for DSK's. Especially with the great new features of the "Mix" inputs, vMix can really be more traditional, for those who need it. And WAY for powerful for managing layers. (maybe you might want the Stinger on layer 2, you can't do that in a traditional switcher.)

Thanks,

Steve

Currently and incorrectly, as the screen capture shows below, the vMix Stingers are layered above the four overlays.

The standard use of Stingers are considered as a means to transition between two background images, i.e. Program (Bus A) and Preview (Bus B).
Not unlike other transitions such as Fade, Wipe, Slide, Fly, Cube and many others.
And the Overlays or Keyers are considered as being downstream of any transition effect.

Currently all Overlays are lost behind the Stinger, for the duration of the Stinger transition, and reappear once the Stinger has completed.
Not good, and does not adhere to the standard operational practices of television and video production

It is therefore requested that vMix be modified to correctly implement the proper functioning of the Stinger feature as a Transition.

As Stingers can be used as segues not only for sports replays, but also live crosses, pre-recorded interviews, beauty & colour shots, and it is desirable to have the
ID bugs, sports results, clocks, or tickers remain visible during any background stinger transition, as shown below.

This issue has been raised on many occasions, and yet has never been resolved.
It is a simple matter of adjusting the layer priority in the vMix application.

Video switchers/mixers that have stingers as a transition mode include, Grass Valley, Sony Broadcast, Panasonic, Ross Video, Blackmagic Design, Broadcast Pix, Newtek Tricaster ....
where the Overlays or Keyers have priority over the Stinger Transition.

These Stinger functions are also referred to as : Media Wipe, Clip Stores, Animation Stores, Replay Transition Device (RTD) on various manufacturer’s video switchers/mixers.
No one professional technical director I spoke to in recent days could see any production value in blocking out the Overlay keys during a vMix Stinger transition.

Even the Newtek Tricaster uses the Stingers as a transition (Animation Store Transitions), after confirming this with the local Newtek support representative.
vMix is the only application where this is incorrectly reversed and applied.

An additional feature could be to add an “Overlay Priority” feature (checkbox/button) for those Users who still wish to have the Stinger as the top layer over the Overlays.
Thereby providing flexibility for all Users who have become familiar with its current mode of operation.

Steve, that would be brilliant. Very powerful tool for Stinger transitions.
