As the screen capture shows below, the vMix Stingers are layered above the four overlays. Stingers are considered as a means to transition between two background images, i.e. Program (Bus A) and Preview (Bus B). Not unlike other transitions such as Fade, Wipe, Slide, Fly, Cube and many others. The Overlays or Keyers are considered as being downstream of any transition effect. This issue has been raised on many occasions, and yet has never been resolved. It is a simple matter of adjusting the layer priority in the vMix application. Currently all Overlays are lost behind the Stinger, for the duration of the Stinger transition, and reappear once the Stinger has completed. Not good, unless someone knows of a way to adjust the layer priority within vMix. Stingers can be used as segues not only for sports replays, but also live crosses, pre-recorded interviews, beauty & colour shots, and it is desirable to have the ID bugs, sports results, clocks, or tickers remain visible during a background stinger transition.

Quote:Currently all Overlays are lost behind the Stinger, for the duration of the Stinger transition, and reappear once the Stinger has completed In my experience it's correct. In all my productions stingers are correct only if they are over the overlays and not under the overlays. maybe you need the stinger under the overlays but in this case you have to use something else, such as an alpha video with overlays and some triggers to change the active input. I hope I've been helpful Regards, Matteo

Matteo. Can you provide examples of any video switchers/mixers which have stingers not as a transition effect? Some video switchers/mixers that have stingers as a transition mode include, Grass Valley, Sony Broadcast, Panasonic, Ross Video, Blackmagic Design, Broadcast Pix, Newtek Tricaster .... where the Overlays or Keyers have priority over the Stinger Transition. Also referred to as : Media Wipe, Clip Stores, Animation Stores, Replay Transition Device (RTD)

@ BETech
As an FYI, you can always use any of the other Overlay channels under your graphic (1-3 for example if graphic on 4) as the channel for your Stinger and engage it manually. (you cannot select Stinger Input, but you can set the "Cut Point")

I have not tried this as yet, but maybe you can set a trigger to remove the overlay when the stinger is triggered, and bring up another overlay, or whatever on the input of the incoming video or video source.....

Having been a technical director (vision switcher) during my career, and today having spoken with several professional technical directors in broadcasting and live video production confirming that Stingers are indeed a transition on all the hardware video mixers that are currently available. All Overlay Keyers are downstream of the Stinger transition, whether on a Mix-effects row or on the Main Program row. No one person could see any production value in blocking out the Overlay keys during a vMix Stinger transition. Even the Newtek Tricaster uses the Stingers as a transition (Animation Store Transitions), after confirming this today with the local Newtek support representative. vMix is the only application where this is incorrectly reversed. Martin, can this be rectified so that vMix adheres to the standard operational and production normality. Perhaps adding a “Overlay Priority” feature (checkbox/button) for those Users who still wish to have the Stinger as the top layer over the Overlays.

I have also struggled with this, have to actually use overlay 1 as the "Stinger" in scripts to keep the overlays as DSK's
