Shame on me for not testing first.....

I have 7.5 hrs (368GB) of recordings from an event yesterday using the new vmix avi codec that will not play or load into an editor. I first tried on my post production machine and got the error "codec not found" or "missing codec" (depending on the application) so I found buried in the help file that vmix must be installed on the machine (doesn't need licence or activation). But the same error continued. Restarted the PC.... same issue. I decided then to test on the original production machine and got the same exact errors! The PC that created the files can not even play the files! As a last resort, I loaded the videos into Vmix and they did in-fact play. So I know the files are intact and not corrupted. Any ideas on how I can get the video codec to work with other windows applications?

Hi,

The vMix Video Codec is designed primarily for use with Adobe Premiere or Magix Vegas Pro.
Some applications such as VLC use their own codec system and therefore will not play the videos.
Windows Media Player should work fine though.

What editor are you using?

I use Grass Valley Edius. The new Vmix avi codec is OK.

It would be a good installer to install only the vmix codec to computer without Vmix.
It is possible?

I can confirm the following in Windows 10:

  • "Movie & TV" - Does NOT work
  • Windows Media Player - Does work
  • Premier Pro CS5 (older version but still functional) - Does NOT work
  • Premier Pro CC 2019 - Does work ("inconsistency in the file structure" errors occur)
  • Microsoft Expression Encoder (old EOL software but still very functional) - Does NOT work
  • VLC - Does NOT work

Maybe a running list like this of what the new codec will and will not work with should be included in the help file. I also agree that a stand alone installer for the codec would be nice.

I just edited and rendered a video using Premier Pro CC 2019/Adobe Media encoder (vmix codec to H264 6Mbs) and the result was TERRIBLE. Looks like I will be playing back the archive files in vmix and recording them again.

Handbrake also doesn't work for compression....

before 24 i would take the raw instant replay files and compress for posterity...

now... handbrake won't read them..

1. is there a better alternative to handbrake (which i doubt)
2. is there a way to use a different codec?

I use Brorsoft to convert them, seems to do the job.
