Has anyone tested the virtual PTZ with a 4K camera at 720P? Assuming a sharp focus of the original shot how much do you loose at 300% zoom? Theory says it should be sharp but in looking at 4K footage on a 720P edit suite timeline I think there's substantial loss in sharpness at full frame, looks great when zoomed out to 34% but the zoomed in image looks pretty soft.

The zoomed image quality seems to depend on the native picture quality of the used camera, the F-stop and the used focal-lenght. I´ve tested 4 cams with virtual PTZ connected by Elgato Cam Link 4K.
- Sony Pxw X70 - f4 - excellent
- Panasonic UX 180 - f4 - usable, but a little smooth
- Panasonic DVX 200 - f4 - very good, but smoother than the Sony.
- Panasonic G70 - adapted FT Zuiko 14-54 - f4 - excellent too.

Martin,
Thank you for what is probably going to prove to be some valuable information. My regular cameras are Panasonic 130As and I really don't expect much from them. The camera I plan to use for the virtual PTz (at least starting out) is a Pansonic GH5. I would think that it will give equal/better results to the G80 if setup properly.

Greatly appreciate you sharing this information.

Hi ICOM,
i think a GH5 and a proper lens will do the job well. But think of the relatively big sensor. In some situations, you maybe have to close the iris (f5,6 - f8) to get enough DOF.

Martin,
Great minds follow the same path. The DoF with an M43 was the first concern I had but in our particular application (shooting educational seminars) we'd like to use this primarily for the "Panel Discussion" camera where the plane of focus would be basically the same for all six subjects and the moderator.

In my personal testing of digital cropping the most important thing will be how well your camera does with the lighting of your room/subject. Any type of video noise will be far more noticeable, so make sure anything that would cause noise can be eliminated before you put all your eggs in that basket. Otherwise the feature is pretty awesome and I'm glad vMix is moving in that direction!
