Hi Martin,

I did a sports production over the weekend but had some recording or switching or frame issues.
Their seems to be a few frames flicking a blue colour and dropping frames. Hard to explain so have made a very short video. See link here:


It happen a lot during the 90 min soccer game which was frustrating. At first I thought it had something to do with video delay doing something strange but then was happening more and more and I was not doing replays later in the game.
I have upgraded to the lastest version of vmix which is fine but this issue has never happened before.

What was running:

Single camera in
Capture card for live camera feed
video delay input with 20 secs delay
Audio input
one logo graphic input
Live graphics coming in from casparcg

One thing to note. I did not see this happening during the production. Only realised it when I started clipping together a highlights video from master vmix recording. Was recording AVI decklink MPEG compressor as I always use.

Sorry. Done now. Was still in draft form.
I just noticed the video does not show colour flickering as much as on adobe premier but jumps and missed frames instead. Cant seem to make a file that totally represents the issue. Sorry.

Probably due to heat increasing of your PC. We had same problems before. We put some fans (big fans :S) in front of the PC and now, no issues at all even for 8 hours live broadcast

I'm not sure it is heat or component related as it is jumping backwards to previous frames.

If you play the raw AVI directly in something like VLC or in vMix itself does the flickering occur?

Hi Martin,

No. Played the AVI one in VLC and vMix. Both cases the video very very slightly stuttered but only slightly.
Played back again in premier cs6 and same thing. Flickering colours in two frames. On showing a friend today. He noticed one frame was inverted and rotated, very strange.

He did notice the I had de-interlace ticked which was apparently wrong. I have a 1080i camera. He said I should de tick that box? Is that correct?
We now notice the program screen in vMix has shuttering effect on motion but he said the actual recording will be fine.

Are you able to create a short AVI recording and upload it so I can take a look at the raw file?
Deinerlace should be ticked in most circumstances.

Also, are best setting to check the deinterlace option with a Sony 1080i camera?

Hi Bryan,

I will need the original AVI file so I can see if it is a decoding issue or as a result of the recording.
You can use a service like dropbox to upload the file.

Also, what graphics card are you using in that machine?
See if there is an update available.

ok. Only issue is the two files, first half and second half are approx 32Gb in size each. Thoughts?

btw, the card is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti

That's probably not going to be practical to upload.
I will explain the test I was going to do anyway so you can try it yourself.

Download virtual dub below:
http://www.virtualdub.org/

It's a great simple editor for AVI files that allows you to go through
the video frame by frame and pinpoint the frames that are jumping around.

When you find a problem frame go to Video menu -> Copy source frame to clipboard
Then paste into Paint and upload here.

Also it would be helpful to see the log files that are created alongside the AVI file.

Hi Martin,

Well. I did that. Ran the program. It did not do the same thing. I looked like missing frames as in it jumped but with no colour bleeding like on the videos.
I tested for lots of point during the game but could not get the colour slipping or colour flickering to happen.

So, I redid the match from the tape and played back into vmix with recording and creating video replay clips along the way as normal.
Also changed the HDMI cable back to the normal one I use from the camera. I only did the same fault again once when transitioning to a replay but only once.

I am wondering if the HDMI cable may have been loose on the camera? I looked at the recording log on vmix and it showed 5 dropped frames over a 30 min recording. Showed zero on cpu

Sorry to bring this up again. I really want to use the video delay feature for replays during a live event but from my issues I have stopped.

A client really wants replays so i have started testing again to find problem with the skipping colour frames issue again.
I believe I have narrowed it down to video delay feature.

I also notice when I wipe to play video delay the audio level meters flicker for a sec then back to solid.
When I play the full play list that I have created during the game they play back fine in vmix but again i see the audio level meters flicker each time it transitions to next clip in play list.

Point to not:

Recorded file plays back ok in vmix and vlc but colour flicker and frames issue is in adobe premier when I start some post editing.

Hi Bryan,

So just to confirm, the flickering only ever appears when editing in Premiere?
And also only for portions of the recording where the video delay was used?

@ Bryan
1) What version of Premiere are you using?
2) Have you tried other settings to record the video delay? (I've had no issues with DV Video encoder but I'm still using SD)
and on a completely unrelated note
3) How are you incorporating CasparCG? (thought it required key and fill)

I am using CS6, I will try other video delay settings today
Yes, I am using CasparCG for live graphics. HDMI in (Intensity Pro) from camera, then HDMI out ( Mini monitor) with graphics, then HDMI back in (Mini recorder) with graphics.
