Ok, I'm getting more into green screen work and want to build several custom virtual sets. The included virtual sets are great for testing and for certain situations, but for the most part we want to create personalized sets for each show or project we produce. My friend is an amazing animator and has created a looping MP4 background for our set. I've also seen the paid virtual sets, and they are nice, but since we have someone to build the graphics and animations, I'd rather build them myself.

I've searched the forums extensively and haven't found much on the subject, other than a post from 7 years ago. Martin suggested an easy work around of copying one of the folders of the included sets, and replace the media with your own. I'm still not sure how to edit the config file, but i was able to replace the background with my own image. However, what i really want is to replace the background with the looping MP4 my friend made.

I've got a gig this Thursday and it would be awesome if i could get some guidance here.

Thanks in advance.

Just thought maybe a PNG sequence would work. I'll try that.

UPDATE: png sequence did not work.

have you considered using a UV map ?

Seems a bit tight on time to learn to edit the config file

just use one of the blank ones and dump your layers into it in the VT setup , choose your mp4 as the background

Thanks so much for this! I won’t be able to watch this video until I get home from my day job. Does this make it easy to just drop in my own media? Just drop and replace without having to edit the config file?

Which included virtual set has the UV map to copy?

Yes
a virtual set is basically the same as a multi view (layers) just coded into a config file with its base sources included and optional camera 'angles'

the VT named blank10 has 10 blank layers rather than preset ones

Ok this sounds easy enough. I will try it out tonight.

My next question is, our custom looping set background has virtual screens that we want to map to be able to be changed to whatver we want in vmix. Does this mean we need to edit the UV map of the background to account for the screens?

Thanks so much for your help!

I watched a bit of the tutorial video you shared on my lunch. I’m still not quite sure how it will work with my files. I’ve got the animated background, an animated desk, and at least one virtual screen.

I understand that virtual sets are essentially multi view inputs, but I want to make sure this is an actual virtual set that can update the virtual screens, add talent, and be able to use the virtual zoom.

I’ll take a closer look when I get home.

Yep. Doggy! You're my dawg!! Blank10 is the key. I've seen it there every time i open a virtual set, but never knew what it was for or how to use it. This isn't exactly what i was initially trying to figure out. What i really want is to make the custom UV maps to really customize a preset virtual set. Now that my friend and i have looked at this using the Blank10 preset, we have a great starting point, and best of all, we have what we need for our show tomorrow. We're really excited to start using virtual sets more now. the whole team is jacked! lol.

I really appreciate your help doggy. here is a small sample of what were working with. I will post the link to the show tomorrow so you can see it in action.

Hahaha ya I immediately realized I accidentally uploaded a wav file instead of mov. I’ve been trying to upload the mov for an hour and it won’t work

Here is the link to our show from last night. Season 2 Premiere of ClanDestine LIVE!

Had a lot of little issues last minute so there are a few annoying mistakes like the main cam being overexposed and slightly out of color balance. And some of the virtual cam moves weren’t pretty but overall I’m very happy with the flexibility of the Blank10 preset for virtual sets.

Plus the audio was all over the place (levels and panning) but, yes, lots of potential :)

Yeah forgot to mention the audio. That was bad! I often times get clips at the last minute and don’t have time to check the levels. I’m sure there is a way to set limits on the audio, but I’m not sure how to do it. What’s the easy way to set master audio limits for the master?

It was more the live presenters on the virtual set that I was referring to. Only on the right channel, at least for some parts, and at a lower level than much of the rest, like the introduction/announcement.

vMix supports VST3 plug-ins, so some sort of limiter plug-in (like the Waves L1 or L2) is always a useful thing to have in case the audio in an imported clip is higher than your target "peak program" level. However, that won't correct low-level dialogue, nor is it a good idea to be banging into the limiter for prolonged periods - it should just be there to prevent short-term overload prior to human intervention to correct the level manually. If you want good audio you need someone to be monitoring it, watching the meters and adjusting levels on the fly, like they do on "real TV".
