Built-in "Compressor" is useless.
Built-in "Gain" easy make overload.
Automatic gain is harmful.

Hardlimiter like have Adobe Audition is must have.

Check L1 Ultramaximizer from Waves which is a compressor and limiter that works great on the Master bus for final "masterization". Really great!

As Guillaume says waves L1 is a great compressor/limiter and also if you are looking for another option check out izotope Ozone under their mastering sweet.
I find out of all the plugins I own Ozone gets used the most in video production.

Nope but it looks like MaxxVolume from Waves which works great by auto adjusting gain levels of multiple inputs so that they all match.
