We are considering doing a couple of vMix builds based on Xeon E and the C246 chipset allowing for ECC memory:

Intel Xeon E-2186G CPU
Gigabyte MW32-SP0 motherboard (C246 chipset)
32 GB Crucial DDR4 2666MHz ECC CT16G4WFD8266 - 2 x 16GB
Nvidia Quadro P2000
Samsung SM961 512GB MZVKW512HMJP (NVMe) Samsung 2280 PCIe Gen3.0 x 4 (not my first choice, but is on the QVL)

Performance wise the build should be in the same ballpark as the Ruby build, but Z270 / Z370 / Z390 allows for higher memory frequencies.

Price wise Xeon E and C246 are pretty close to i7 counterparts and Z270 / Z370 / Z390.

Reliability should be better with ECC memory, but what do you think? Would you trade a little performance (memory frequency) to do this build?

Ecc do not mean better reliability of all together system. In fact p2000 do not have ecc. You need to buy p5000 if you want ecc.

About comparison vs ruby, p2000 Is slower than gtx1060. I recommend p4000. I have a sli with 2x p4000, dual performance on 3d, similar to 1080ti.

Regards,

Jose.

Thanks JoseL.

The idea here was to propose an alternative Ruby-build relatively similar in both performance and price, but with a focus on improved reliability. Quadro P5000 is four times the price of a P2000 so it would take the system to another price league.

The P2000 may be slower than a GTX1060 in some regards, but it offers more than two encode sessions which comes very handy when doing dual recordings and multiple streams. Apart from that, the Quadro drivers have increased focus on reliability compared to Geforce drivers.

When mentioning ECC I was referring to the system memory that the C246 chipset allows for, but of course, it would be nice with ECC on the graphics card as well.
