Hi !
Can anyone help me to choose how to best extend a HDMI connection ?
cables with boosters ? or cat5e/6 ?
will need over 50 meteres . to work with HD with hdmi output cameras.

you need two parallel cat 5/6 cables for hdmi extension over cabt at hd 1080 p25. I switched to using hd sdi through an hdmi to sdi converter and with direct input using bm mini recorder (hdmi and sdi inputs). that way you can also go to 100 mtr .
the connections are more reliable. for a fixed situation hdmi over cat could be considered but i would not recommend it for ambulant use.

sorry for responding to an old thread.
100 meter over cat5/6 or boosted is too much for my comfortzone
i use fiber for this, which is (with the converters i use) reliable up to 800 meters, and no gsm or other signal will influence it.
(I'm looking for affordable wireless for 500 meters or more HD, haven't found anything i can afford unfortunately :( )

Is the fiber optic solution for HDMI or SDI? Would you care to share the specs/model of the equipment.
For the webcast I do (outdoor water ski tournaments), I'm currently sticking with SD. Its easy to run a RG6 coax cable long distances for all the cameras. Would like to move to HD at some point, but the solutions seem expensive or potentially unreliable.

i have quite good experiences with the cat5 extenders of several brands, they usually work as advertised. Only thing that is a bit tricky in my environments is the cat5 connectors on them. since there are a lot of vibrations (i do drag racing events mostly) sometimes i loose signal briefly (they don't really like gsm phones very nearby, but some shielding around the connectors fixed that)
the fiberconverters i use are startech's and extend HDMI, they go about 800 yards, but i think that as long as you have the correct fiber (matching the specs of the converter) you will get results as advertised with all brands.
this stuff isn't consumer-cheap (although not unaffordable like a decent wireless set for example) so the manufacturers don't have the heart to sell something that isn't up to spec, because the community they sell it to is small, and internet makes the world small.
Fiber has the main advantage that electronic static doesn't affect them.

I would not try to extend an hdmi signal. I understand that some ppl have success with cat 5 extenders, signal boosters and so on. I wish was so lucky. I have used a cheap radio shack hdmi repeater to extend a signal a distance of 50 feet and it worked perfect for some events and somedays it wouldn't work at all. I have even used a 100ft hdmi with no signal boost, again somedays it works others not so much.
I recommend always converting to an hd-sdi "signal". I use the atomos converter and between the internal and external battery they last all day with no external power.
