Hello All,
I just purchased a laptop about 2 months ago. Here are my specs:
COMPUTER ITEM: HP ENVY Laptop (17m-ae0xx)
PRODUCT NUMBER: 1KT17UA#ABA
PROCESSOR: Intel Core i7-7500 CPU @ 2.70GHz
SYSTEM RAM: 16GB
VIDEO DEVICE 1: NVIDIA GeForce 940MX v.24.21.13.9836
VIDEO DEVICE 2: Intel HD Graphics 620 v.23.20.16.4973
TOTAL GRAPHICS RAM: 8,278MB
OPERATING SYSTEM: Windows 10 x64
I haven't done much with it yet, but I'm seeking some recommendations as in what devices I can possibly use
to get the most out of my laptop. Ideally, I'd like to get an Thunderbolt Enclosure Chassis and have a couple PCIe HDMI capture cards
installed. I like to connect two cameras via HDMI, but I'm not too sure of the port what appears to be a thunderbolt port on this laptop.
I've read different articles and according to some that I've read, this port is only equivalent to a USB 3.0 port (this is a Gen 1 port).
Is there anyone that has played around with this particular laptop (or anything close)? What was your experience?

Unfortunately, an i7 7500U processor is a duo core, not a quad core processor. It's not that fast, and has a benchmark lower than i7 quad core 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th generation CPUs. The Envy model you have does not have Thunderbolt connectivity. Only USB 3.1. http://www8.hp.com/us/en/images...61929_tcm245-2462032.pdfYour options are USB capture and that's about it.

Your options are USB capture and that's about it. Or external encoding from HDMI to NDI via ethernet? (BirdDog Mini or upcoming Magewell models)

Laptops CPUs and GPUs have historically been less capable than their desktop counterparts. They do this to save power and thus deliver battery life. Only quite recently have laptop CPUs started to become more directly comparable to desktop parts.
In the Intel world, watch out for CPUs ending in "U" as that denotes a laptop part. It can be confusing when you're considering things like the NUCs or other SFF desktops. They may opt for laptop parts to ease issues of cooling.

Didn't think about NDI, how would external encoding from HDMI be set up?

HDMI cable from the camera into a hardware encoder box, like the BirdDog Studio/Mini or Magewell Pro Convert unit, then ethernet cable to a gigabit hub/switch, also linked to the laptop. If a PoE hub/switch is used, that will power the encoders, or else they will need to be powered locally. Also, in the case of the Magewell unit, it can be directly connected via USB2 to the laptop, using RNDIS, instead of via ethernet and, since it's sending compressed NDI data (full spec, not low bit-rate NDI|HX), it is able to transfer full HD video over USB2.

With an i7 7500U proc and no GTX, I don't think NDI is a solution to recommend

If still possible, consider returning the laptop, and getting something with a Thunderbolt port. Make sure the laptop has Thunderbolt by checking the specs on the manufacturer's website. Some seller websites have errors on the specs. A similarly priced laptop to look at would be a Dell 15.6" Inspiron 15 7000 Series Gaming Notebook I7577-7722BLK. I bought one for a client. It gets teamed with a Sonnet Echo Express and a Magewell Pro capture Quad SDI, and works well.

A copy of VLC Player on another PC, combined with the NDI plug-in, can play out video onto the LAN, and then run one or more copies of NDI Studio Monitor on the laptop, while viewing the decoded image and monitoring the CPU/GPU usage in Task Manager. Should help to give some idea about whether it's a viable option or not.
