Hello,

I just finished recording an important academic event on the University I work for.
There were directors and important people from diverse departments.
Two hours babysitting microphone levels and camera angles/zoom.

The vmix's record button was solid red with no warning.
In the end of the event I hit the button to stop recording and it behaved normally.

My vMix is Basic HD - 20.0.0.55 x64.

I didn't applied latest update since it was working fine on previous recordings. (the team was working)

Then I went to Vmix Video Tool and perceived the recorded file is only 1kb.

My recording settings are:
FFMPEG
1920X1080
NTSC 30p
MP4 X264 AAC
MP4
8M
384k
Audio: checked, Master
Audio Delay: 0
New File Every: None Minutes

And I'm attaching the log files:

File Attachment(s):
vMixStorage.zip (4kb) downloaded 9 time(s).

There seems to be an issue most likely with ffmpeg. I cant quite tell from what you have sent but it looks as though the headers weren't written when stopping recording.

the foolproof method that I have adopted is to record in mpeg2.

Thank you for the sugestion,

However, I don't think recording to mpeg2 would add the redundancy required in this case.

The problem was not only with ffmpeg. The problem was in vMix too.

vMix was indicating recording was started, ongoing and that all was going fine.
Record button was red and elapsed time was being displayed and counting, when in reality it didn't even begin to record.

I even choose a so called "fault tolerant" recording format (FFMPEG/MP4), according to vMix User Guide at

https://www.vmix.com/hel...tTolerantRecordings.html

To tell reliably whether the recording is ongoing or not is a fundamental function/requirement for any recording software.
And vMix v20 fails at that.
And I don't have any hopes that this is different in vMix v21, since there is no indication on the vMix 21 Changelog
(https://forums.vmix.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=14794).

Here is my 'PragmaticAgileSoftwareDevelopmentProof' method:

For now, I'm going to transmit every event being recorded, to a private youtube live chanel, in parallel to the local recording.
And, eventually, if possible, I'm going to put a secondary encoder recording in parallel too.

I didn't shut down the computer, hoping someone would tell me a way to recover from this situation.
But I don't think it is possible anymore.

Anyway, I did a recording test following the event and another test after restarting vMix.
The first gave me a FFMPEG error and correctly displayed it to me.
The second test, after restarting vMix, worked without problems: audio and video were recorded.

Since I think vMix developers need to make better ways to detect recording failures,
I'm sharing the logs of such tests in the attached file.

Hi,

Could you go to Settings -> About and click Send Support Report then drop us an email at info@vmix.com.au?
I want to take a look at this in more detail, as we have not come across this issue before and would like to resolve it.

Regards,

Martin

Hello,

I just did that.

But, I updated to vMix v21.0.0.45 before sending the report since in less than three hours, I'm going to do a dual transmission (Facebook + YouTube) with recording.

Since v20 gave me this big headache, I did the update.

I'm sending you my key by e-mail.

Thank you in advance,

Richard
