I want some gain, but I also want the compressor to correct the gained signal above the threshold level to prevent clipping.
If the gain is post compressor in the audio inputs, can I then use the gain in the audio input and the compressor in the master output?
(can I then compress the gained signal en prevent clipping?)

Just using the Gain and watching the input Vu-Meters answers your question. If you want to prevent from clipping you need a limiter. I can recommend L2 from Waves as a VST3 plugin which acts as a ccompressor and limiter Link below offers you (or anyone) 10% discount on all Waves plugins https://www.waves.com/r/fgcn5q Guillaume

The EQ and gain are both post compressor, they both change the effective threshold level. So the gain is a make up gain I guess.
Can you recommend L2 settings to just prevent from clipping and not change the dynamic?

You can adjust pre gain on your sound board or sound mixer.
Audio settings cannot be recommended, they have to be adjusted depending on your situation. In general my settings are between -9 and -12 dB for comp threshold and -0.2 for limiter. This way it still feels natural and it NEVER clips. But this might not be good for you. Engineering audio is a personal thing
