I am working with some folks in the education world which is apparently filled with these Chromebook laptops (Ugh!). The idea is that a teacher would use her laptop as a Desktop Capture input in the class' vMix production. Hardwired is a last resort, but it can't be that hard to do Desktop Capture on Chrome O/S, right?

+1. Chromebook capture would be great. The mechanism exists because various webrtc-based services (Hangouts, Jitsi Meet, etc.) already implement desktop/presentation sharing for meetings. It might require a browser extension.

A Chrome laptop is limited in what you can do with it, it mainly is running 'web' code.

You should be able to send the screen using the GoogleCast functionally in the Chromebook. Then receive that using a tool like AirServer (on a Windows PC). Then us NDI Scan Converter (or similar) to get that were you need it.

A Connect Spark HDMI could also be a good solution if these units have HDMI outputs.

Some Chromebooks have Intel processors, some have Arm chips.

I bought the old Chromebook Pixel in the spring. It was $1200 at point of introduction in 2013, but was available new for $350 in May 2017. It has a great display and an i5-3247U.

I would hope that there's some way to screen share via vMix call.

Hi,
Is there any update about Chromebook capture? I'm a high school teacher "trapped" into the virtual classroom initiative by my overenthusiastic colleague who teaches science (it's rather challenging for me to make heads or tails of everything at 53). Or should we just stick to Screencastify for students' Chromebooks?

Most Chromebooks have an HDMI port or can be fitted with an HDMI adaptor.

Teach joins a Meets call and screen shares the entire screen. vMix machine captures the Meet call. I've asked on the newTek forums for an NDI > ChromeCast.

As a representative from the education segment, you could say I also use this laptop. I use it as a login for desktop capture. It's not that hard. I work for a typing company and I often seo audit service. In general, for such tasks it is also convenient to use work processes, and even simplify them to some extent.
