Real World Maximum Multicorder Channels Limiting Factors

Our aim is to record multiple channels via multi-corder. I wanted to check to see how many channels of recordings I can get.

We are looking to get a Ruby system with a 1060 or 1070 or better nvidia card, but I wondered if this is going to be able to handle four or more channels of multi-corder (HD) - there wont be any any other encoding required, no master record or streaming for this particular application. We just want Camera masters to edit in the NLE.

I tried on our pre-ruby system but its just not powerful enough to handle more than 2 record channels with multi-corder.
I wonder what the limiting factor is, as I don't want to end up splashing out and not increasing the record channel count.

Just ran some tests on our pre-ruby system (2011 Mac 8 core 2.8g -16GB ram), seems like I can get 5 channels (maybe more but only have 5 inputs) using Newtek, Magix and BlackMagic Mjpg codecs even on our crummy sata i system and GTX8800, the problem lies with any GPU based encoding streams I think as the GPU can only handle 2?
Any other thoughts on what codec to use for editable footage that isnt too massive and could write that many streams to sata II disc?

Best use i frame only codecs as they are a lot simpler to encode but make bigger files. Try DNX HD, Prores or maybe the lossless Magicyuv. Magic will make big files with only 3 to 4:1 compression but since they are lossless you could compress them later to H264 with no loss.

For 5 records I'd want the redundancy of a couple of SSDs.

i have tested munticorder with 7 cameras plus master recording.... so... 8 files,
using newtek codec . on a single ssd. no dropframes.
under 20% cpu

on a HP z600 dual exacore 48 gigs of ram , and a GTX 1060

Thanks for the input folks, are you just going to a regular SSD?
The Newtek codec looks promising the files are still relatively large, not sure a SATA II SSD on its own could cope, plus I guess i'd need a pretty large SSD - what are you using?

BTW, I got 6 streams on my 2011 mac pro 8 core with a GTX8800 using the Decklink MJPEG codec!
Smaller files again, but will see what the edit is like on the Newtek code for 6 streams

How did you get that done?

I have a new system with i7 and when i start the Mulitcorder with more than 3 Cameras, the cpu usage goes to 100% and its start dropping frames like hell. What kind of record settings do you use?

Blackmagic MJPEG codec was what I used at 1080i on to a SATA Drive - not even SATA II
