There is another thread here about controlling PTZ on the JVC KY-PZ100 camera.
But before controlling PTZ is useful, you must get the video into Vmix first.
Has anyone successfully done this yet?

We can get RTSP video from the PTZOptics camera with: rtsp://10.1.10.232:554/1
However, we have not yet discovered the magic configuration of the JVC camera (and Vmix) to allow similar access of the video into Vmix. Of course, I am asking about IP interconnection, not SDI or HDMI.

Many configuration attempts result in the demoralizing error message: "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it. 10.1.10.231:6504" And no combination of including (or defaulting) the port number and/or the stream number appears to get us any closer to an actual connection. The VLX Player was also unable to access any kind of IP video from the JVC camera.

In the Vmix booth at NAB 2017 we were told by a popular streaming personality that "sure, if it supports RTSP, the JVC camera should work great with Vmix." That seemed like a very reasonable and sensible response, so we bought the JVC KY-PZ100 because of the superior movement control (compared to other sensibly-priced PTZ cameras). The JVC camera produces silky-smooth, broadcast-quality pan/tilt motion, supporting not only very slow speeds, but also providing a "ramp" option at start/stop to avoid that "surveillance-grade" jerky camera motion.

The IP cameras that I use are from Grandstream. The company offers a "Search" utility that you can run, which will automatically locate the cameras as long as they are on the same subnet as the Search app.

How to find the RTSP URL for any IP camera using Wireshark:

Thank you @ask, that appeared to get us much closer, but still no cigar.

Now, it is throwing "401 Not Authorized" error when we try to connect to the camera from Vmix.
And if we try to view the stream from VLC Media Player, it pops up a box asking for login and password.
But we didn't set any password for the RTSP stream on the JVC camera (box is empty)
And there is no option at all for setting a username/login.
So, we are still stuck with no video from the camera.

And thank you @mjgraves If we could get any kind of video stream from the camera, we could use Wireshark to sniff out the protocol. But the only thing we can get over the network is the camera's built-in "web page" to control the camera (and see a preview screen of the video.)

When you select RTSP on the camera, the ONLY configurable field is Password. But, of course, if you don't know what username/login is required, the password (whether blank or not) is a moot point.

So I take it we are blazing new trails here? No Vmix user has yet tried to connect to a JVC KY-PZ100 camera?

Try to put
username:password@ip:port/stream

Is the common format to pass a tcp request including login informations

Thank you @llegfede

Yes, we tried that. But it is hard to do when there is no username. (Or the username is unknown).

Researching RFC2326 for RTSP, it says we can apparently use just the password without the username like:

rtsp://:password@10.1.10.231/554/stream

So we will try that incantation next.

Of course it is still a mystery why it is even looking for username or password when there is no password configured for RTSP in the camera.

Ref: https://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2326.txt

We also upgraded the camera to V0101-0093, but that did nothing to the RTSP connection issues.
We weren't expecting that it would, but at least there will be no excuse about running a down-rev unit.

We are are also having issues with power. While the powered hub says that the camera is using PoE, the camera won't do anything unless it has the separate power connected. The camera doesn't appear to acknowledge that PoE is present. There is only mention in passing of using PoE in the camera documentation. It seem like they are saying that it is automatic as there is no configuration in either hardware or software for PoE.

Well, we tried
rtsp://:password@10.1.10.231/554/stream
and
rtsp://Cam1:password@10.1.10.231/554/stream

and now we are back with "401 Unauthorized" Is that "progress"? The mystery continues.
("Cam1" is the name we assigned to the first "server")
And no luck with VLC media player, either.

This will be great if we can ever figure out how to connect Vmix to the JVC camera.
Apparently the guys over at Newtek don't have any problem with this.
But I didn't actually see any details of how they are connecting, either.

The URL you give for your PTZ Optics camera is basically an unauthenticated mode of access. It's the same way I've connected to IP surveillance cameras.

A lot of cameras have web interfaces to their setup controls. Quite often there's a setting to allow anonymous access to the stream. This is slightly different from merely not having a password defined.

This defeats the requirement for authentication in the RTSP URL. That might make things easier.

Yes, the JVC camera has numerous menus in its virtual web server configuration pages. The page for configuring RTSP has only one configurable field: Password. You can leave it blank, or put something in there. But we can't get it to work either way.

Of course, we don't know if the camera is expecting a login (or what it might be?) since there is no configuration for that, and it is not mentioned in the documents.

My admittedly lesser cameras are accessible via simply rtsp://192.168.10.123/1

The /1 selects the channel, where 0-4 is full resolution and 5+ is a secondary stream at reduced resolution.

You might find that a surveillance app is handy tool to debug the connectivity matters. I use TinyCam Pro for Android, but there are many. They often have a library of presets for various manufacturers cameras.

Hi just testing the PZ100 this afternoon
I got RTSP working with this address rtsp://jvc:0000@192.168.20.180:554/stream

Vmix will be getting this camera sent to them for further testing and to see if can be added to supported PTZ controls

Hi Sid

In settings for PTZ set the password as 0000 under networking>live stream>server1>rtsp (normal default for jvc is jvc/0000)
Then start streaming. In Vmix I got the stream working using the RTSP and not VLC option
RTSP over TCP
rtsp://jvc:0000@192.168.20.180:554/stream

Update: sorry that URL path is working for VLC method too.

Thank you, @corporatejames. Sid and I have been trying to resolve this problem for weeks. We knew that it would be a forehead-slapping stupidly simple solution, but your help got us directly there. :-)

It even appears that PoE is now working although it didn't seem to go through the power-up calibration sequence as we had expected.

Now that @corporatejames has helped us connect to the RTSP stream, we are getting a second PZ100 camera. We are planning on using a combination of PTZOptics cameras for fixed shots, and the JVC cameras for moving shots, a compromise between budget and production needs.

Since both the PTZOptics cameras and the JVC cameras offer full Red and Blue "paint" color manipulation, we are counting on being able to get the color rendering to match reasonably well. In a full broadcast setting I would want to use identical cameras for optimal color matching. Or at least cameras from the same manufacturer. For example, at least back over the previous decades Sony has had a reputation for their cameras biased more toward red/warm. and Panasonic more toward blue/cool.

If Vmix can integrate the PZ100 camera as they have for the PTZOptics cameras, it will offer Vmix users a choice of PTZ cameras ranging from budget to broadcast-quality. This is great. Thanks again, @corporatejames!

Do you have the latest firmware on the camera? It says on their website that there is a new firmware for PTZ control by Tricaster. Maybe that would work for you?

To a previous post, yes we have installed the most recent firmware upgrade.

A follow up to my colleague Richard Crowley's reply -

Yes, Thank you James!

This solution worked both in vMix and VLC Media Player:

1. RTSP connecting string statement: "rtsp://jvc:0000@<KY-PZ100 ip address>:554/stream"
2. JVC KY-PZ100>Settings>Live Streaming>Server1>Password>"0000"

Happy Video Networking to All!

Hi, Can anyone help me please with the JVC KY PZ Camera - we have 2 of these cameras and are currently using their RTMP feeds successfully to help run our Basketball scoreboard software. Has anyone got the magic sauce that would enable us to actually control the actual PTZ nature of the camera ? Currently we have to use the remote hand controller since we can't figure out how Vmix could take control. We also have a NewTek camera that we can control using the SonyVISCA over IP within Vmix up strangely we can't get vmix to see the NDI HX stream Arhrhrhr . all advice gratefully received . R

going off the other jvc cameras you can only control them through JVCs streaming software so you may not be able to even if you can connect vmix up

From the manufacturer's web site:

  • Standard control protocol over LAN (enables PTZ control by TriCaster and other products)
  • RTMP streaming directly to content delivery network
  • PELCO-D control protocol via RS-422/485

So network-based ptz remote control should be possible, if a Tricaster can do it.
