We just upgraded to a beast of a desktop PC
Full Specs for the Gear Enthusiasts out there
Codex X3-013US Desktop Computer; Intel Core i7-7700K Processor 4.2GHz; NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5 VR Ready; 16GB DDR4-2400 RAM; 512GB M.2 SSD; Microsoft Windows 10 Home; DVD SuperMulti Drive; 10/100/1000 Network; Intel Wireless-AC 3165; Bluetooth 4.2

I thought it was priced right at $1199.
Then I started to notice that older PC's were being sold refurb'd and older PC's were 'reasonably' priced in many cases.
The problem was I could not tell would this be a great fit for vMix or just a barely fit.
Since you can use 2, 3, or 4 PC's now via NDI in your production and since vMix HD Basic is only $60 and gives you a ton of features as an NDI feeder system I thought why not look at a low cost 2nd PC or maybe even a third machine.(Holy Run On Sentence Batman)

I digress, I am posting this for some real world 'old computer' details.
Do you have an 'older' PC?
What are the specs?
What can you do with it, or have you maxxed it out and how?
Where is your bottleneck if you have one? Did you add RAM and now it is wizz bang fast, or add an SD Drive and it made the world of difference?

Here is the computer that got me thinking about this topic it is an HP Envy with a 750ti for $579.99, I have a 660ti in my old PC and it works great so I thought the 750ti should be equally good if not better.

Thanks everyone.

The other thing I have been thinking about again based on seeing them in my inbox is what I call,
The CaptureTop(TM - Not Pending, heheh) - A laptop that you use just to capture a few inputs.
Check out this refurb, http://www.tigerdirect.c...0544&CatId=4935&
It is an i5 for about $250.
Add vMix HD Basic to get more power via NDI for another $60.

How many inputs do you think this CaptureTop could handle, 1 HDMI, 2 HDMI?
I love love love the BirdDog - http://www.bird-dog.tv/ and it seems amazing.
It is also a bit of money and for those on a budget you could get 3 CaptureTops(TM- Not Pending) with vMix HD Basic for about the same cost.

Oh and I know that the BirdDog has ton's of advantages over a CaptureTop, the cool thing with a CaptureTop is that you could use it to send the Feed to the far end and give your Capture Op a confidence monitor from the production if they are remote for some reason. Maybe outside the venue as an example.

Thanks for checking out my post and your help.

Not bought for that intentional purpose, but I've used a Dell Latitude E6530 as a "capture top". Got it off of eBay for about $330. It has an i7-3720QM quad core. Used it with NDI and a Magewell XI100DUSB-HDMI. It got beat up a little after a season of use by one of my football crews. It still works fine which I cannot say that for the camera they used:(

Thinking about using a desktop for the same purpose. Many SFF quad core HP's and Dells out there for very low prices. The drawbacks are the amount of PCIe slots, limited space in the case and low wattage power supplies. But for the price they can be had, they're disposable.

The HP Envy 750ti would seem to be a good unit to build on as long as it doesn't have a proprietary power supply (hate those things).

I forgot about the proprietary hardware. Compaq was horrible about that. The same HD that said Compaq was 10 times the $$$.

Thanks for the heads up about that.

If you look at my post...

https://forums.vmix.com/...aspx?g=posts&t=10700

I have a similar setup as mentioned above...

HP Elitebook 8570W ($300 eBay)
i7 2.7ghz Quad Core
16GB RAM
250GB SSD
Quadro K2000M 2GB graphics card

I use the Magewell SDI USB and it works very well for a mobile setup!

Its an older laptop, yes. Its clunkier than your macbook pro, yes. But it works, stays cool, keeps the CPU low and streams good 720p.

That is what I was wondering as I am getting more and more 'older' 'refurb' emails with some great stuff for a remote camera setup.

Ive been only doing 720p on my desktop because Im running an old i3-2100 and its just not going to push 1080p.

But with the new laptop, Im curious to try 1080p on it and see how it does. Im now waiting on Magewell to send back the replacement SDI USB device as they honored switching out my V1 to V2 which is compatible with both Level A and B SDI.

Ill update you hear on how that goes.
