I tried to capture wirecast with vMix and am having the issue that I can't use the desktop capture on the same machine. Wirecast is not listed in the apps. I opened wirecast before and after I open vMix with the same result.

Tom Sinclair of Streaming Idiots used to do it all the time to stream his show.

You need to go to the Output menu, Output>Virtual Camera Out and configure Virtual Camera in Wirecast. Then it should appear in vMix or other applications.

Yes, thanks. I can grab the program through the virtual output. But I want to record the wirecast interface. I'm not interested in the wirecast program output. Again as a workaround, I can use the entire monitor and crop to the app. I was wondering why wirecast isn't listed in the opened app list like outlook, chrome or others. Is this on purpose.

Perhaps Wirecast handles the video card in a particular way, like using hardware acceleration, that inhibits capturing it via a software approach?

Quite often apps that leverage the hardware acceleration of the video card can't be captured via pure software approach. This was more common long ago when people used DVD player apps. The app frame could be captured, but the video it was playing would be missing, just a large black rectangle in its place.
