Hey everyone. I am a new vMix user. I demoed vMix in early 2020. Later that year my video board controller died. I had quotes from several companies but they were very expensive. One of the companies was Ross. I saw their layout and thought why can't I just use vMix to do something like that. Because this is for a University it was more practical to purchase a system. We went with Stream Dudes.

Here is the original layout that I was able to duplicate from our old video board.

We are running a slightly different layout now.

Our board is 2496x672 (about 100ft wide). I run a 2560x1440 project with the image cropped and positioned in the upper left corner. I run this through a Display port out into a NovaStar controller and to the actual board. Some issues I had to overcome were image stretching and positioning. I tried to do it all by math which told me a stretch factor of 2.14. It was close but it was not correct. vMix positioning is not the easiest to use for this. I ended up creating a layout in photoshop and layering it in the background. I use the virtual set Blank10 template and position all of my elements basically by hand. So my photoshop template was on the background layer and I zoomed and positioned the other layers until that section was perfectly covered. I found out for me, I need to divide or multiply by 2.088. So if X Zoom is 1, then I take 1 divided by 2.088 to get the Y Zoom as 0.4789.

I have been using vMix for almost a year and I have to say that it is working better than expected and better than my old controller. It is very feature-rich, stable, and easy to use. My one big complaint is the aforementioned scaling and positioning. It would be nice to be able to have a display window that doesn't stretch my content, has a positioner with x/y coordinates, and a scaler with pixel dimensions. It would also be nice if it handled XML data slightly differently. Ross datalink allows me to load the whole XML file and not deal with XPath. It also connects to my scoreboard without any 3rd party software or devices. It comes free with Xpression (very pricy).

vMix was not built for video board displays, but it is better than some of the major brands that cost 10 to 100 times more.
