I had a really unfortunate experience during a live event yesterday.

Upon initial setup the system was running fine and tested OK as per the video image into the laptop.
Soon thereafter, I noticed that there was no audio coming in to vMix from the camera input (the camera itself showed good audio levels).
Then suddenly, even the image disappeared and was replaced by color bars!

This lasted for at least an hour and I tried everything - rebooted the laptop, shut down and restarted vMix 3 times, disconnected the camera and reconnected multiple times, checked all the connections again and again, redid the entire vMix preset, with no success.

Then about 3 minutes to go before the event start, the camera input suddenly showed up OK - both video image and audio! Phew!!!
It worked for an hour or so and then suddenly, the camera input froze - frozen video image and no audio!
Even vMix was frozen and I couldn't shut it down to restart it, so I had to reboot the computer and start it again!

I went through the whole thing again, reboot, restarting vMix, etc. and managed to get the input back - but I had lost half an hour of the event, which pissed my client off no end.

System:
The system was tested to the full the day before and everything was functioning perfectly.
vMix HD on a Lenovo i7 laptop with 32 MB ram and dedicated nVidia GPU with 2 GB onboard memory.
Connected to a single Panasonic U90 Camcorder - HDMI > Startech Capture Device > USB 3 port.
The internet connection was fantastic - 300 Mbps Upload and steady as a rock - ethernet wired and not wifi.

Has anyone experienced this sort of thing where the camera input was suddenly dropped during a stream and then reappeared again?
What about the color bars? What could have caused that?
If anyone could please suggest a cause or solution I would be ever so grateful!

My recommendation would be to get rid of USB capture. USB is not locking, shared bandwidth..... Take a NDI encoder instead of the capture card. Kiloview or birddog I can recommend.

Why would I need another encoder when vMix itself is an encoder?
Also I need to capture an Hdmi camera output - so wouldn't a capture device be required?
Another wrinkle is that I need to capture multiple HDMI cameras, which I can do using multiple Startech capture devices connected to the 3 USB 3 ports on my Thinkpad 530.
Also the outputs of these ndi devices are via ethernet - and a laptop would have just the one ethernet input right? So how to connect multiple cameras?
Thanks for your help.

Intel i7 3630QM 2.40 GHz
and Yes - Startech USB3HD CAP

Have been using this configuration for nearly 4 years now and this is the first time this has happened.

Hi
These problems are usually either from the camera settings or the capture card.
I suggest that if your projects are important, be sure to use the SDI input, because this signal is more stable and flawless, and the camera that gives you the SDI output, and the input of your computer must be USB 3, and the output of your capture card. It must also be USB 3 because high quality requires more bandwidth

Common camera glitches are also related to image output settings

Capture card Black magic or Magwel SDI

It couldn't be camera bcos the settings have never been changed. The Startech capture card could be the issue (?)
Of course yes, the card and laptop are USB 3 connections. Camera (Pant U90) has HDMI output no SDI.
Thanks for the suggestions.
