Hello,

We're not yet using Vmix, but are looking at a solution that might convert us from OBS... 😆

We're needing a solution to translate a live youtube video and stream it back out live.

Can anyone say if Vmix can do something like this:

  • on one system, we want to be able to pull down a Youtube video as a source
  • The translator should always be able to clearly hear the youtube video source from Vmix
  • That audio from the video should also be going to main mix and be controlled separately (it will be at about 10% level when translation is happening on top, or at full volume if some other audio is playing, like music).
  • Translator will be giving their audio via standard microphone or USB mic.
  • A 2nd person should get master audio output so they can monitor the full main mix out.

Any ideas if this is possible or how you might solve for it on one system?

Regards

I'm going to assume you have permission from the owner of the YouTube stream you're translating. Otherwise, you could get your channel shut down (and in some cases, face legal action). Okay, got that out of the way. :)

I would add another piece of gear to your setup, an audio mixer.

You can use the special embedding YouTube URL to give you a clean video feed of the YouTube video without all the extra YouTube stuff.

Create a web browser input in vMix with the URL:

https://www.youtube.com/embed/VIDEO_ID

replace VIDEO_ID with the actual video ID.

Route the audio out through your sound card. Do NOT route the audio to Master.

Plug one of the line inputs on the mixer into the audio out of your sound card.

Plug a microphone into the mixer.

The person operating the mixer can control the mix in real time between the video and the mic.

Run the output of the mixer into the line input of the sound card.

Create an audio input in vMix, from the line input of the sound card. This will be what goes out to the stream.

You can forego the use of a mixer, and control the audio level in vMix using shortcuts. A shortcut to set the audio level to 10%, and another shortcut to set it to 100%. Assign the shortcuts to keys on a StreamDeck or XKeys.

Hope it works out for you!

I just realized, if you use the web browser input in vMix to play YouTube videos, you will get ads. To avoid ads, you should use a desktop browser, logged into your YouTube Premium account to avoid ads, and do a desktop capture (with audio) from vMix. The rest of the instructions should be the same.

Thanks Kross for the quick reply...

Actually, its our own video we're translating, so no issues with copyright.

How/where does the translator hear the video coming? If Vmix is routing it to a sound card?

YOur mentioning about forgoing mixer? Is there a different setup in case we don't use a mixer? How will translator hear full audio in that case?

If you don't use a mixer, you would route the YouTube audio out to headphones.

Thinking a little more about this, my setup above would work if you were using the web browser input in vMix, but if you use a desktop browser and desktop capture in vMix, audio routing becomes a little more tricky. Still possible, just a little more complicated. I'd use a virtual audio cable (vb-audio.com), set your desktop audio to go to the virtual audio cable, then in vMix capture audio from the virtual audio cable. Then vMix can output its final mix to the sound card and to headphones.

Adding to my answer above, if you use a mixer, then the setup would be like this:

Desktop audio (including web browser with YouTube video) goes out sound card, and into an input on the mixer.

A microphone goes into another input on the mixer.

Headphones on the mixer allows the person to hear the video, as well as their own voice.

They can control the mix by adjusting the volume control for the YouTube audio up and down as needed.

The output of the mixer goes into the line input of the sound card, and into vMix.

vMix is capturing the desktop for video, and capturing audio from the line in from the mixer.
