I can't find the right page in the docs right now, but I seem to remember that the virtual set thumbnails are updated when you store a PTZ camera position (and maybe some other actions). If your camera happens to be showing black at that point (lights off, iris closed, somebody standing in front of the camera, etc), the thumbnail will remain black until you perform an action that will update the thumbnails.
