Can I set the HDMI port of my laptop as the program out so I can put it into a streaming device?
If so, how?

Completely possible. Last year at our event, from one copy of vmix, i had three completely different outputs going at once: a stream going to youtube and two different hdmi feeds going to in-house tv's. You need to go into the settings and choose which output goes to which display, and then turn on the 'fullscreen' button in the middle column to get them to send video.

Agreed. This is possible. I have once used this to send program output to a large display for an audience.
You setup your laptop as if for dual-monitor use, sending the HDMI out to the encoder. In vMix set the external output to be the target for the "Full Screen" function. Turn on Full Screen.
You well need to test to be sure that you get audio routed correctly.
You may find that the increased load on the GPU is worrisome.

Thanks guys
I am struggling to manage it still though I am on a win 10 machine - I am usually Mac so I struggle a lot with windows.
I will keep trying, however anything that springs to mind is more than welcomed.
Thanks again

- Connect the second output (monitor or encoder) - In Windows Display settings, set to "Extend Display" across both outputs - Order the displays to ensure that the secondary output is #2 - there's a function to "identify outputs" to help with this. - Click on display #2 and set resolution as appropriate. - Start vMix - Ensure vMix is on the primary (#1) display - In vMix Settings, Display section, set Fullscreen 1 output to Display #2 - Click OK to save setting - In vMix main display turn on Fullscreen (top center of the UI) Program output should appear on the second output.

Just a quick note to say that Fullscreen is not the same at External. With Fullscreen, you are likely to see dropped frames/stuttering, when an external card/Thunderbolt output will not.
This happens even on our Obsidian i9 systems with Titan RTX cards.
