Hi Everyone

first post, brand new to V-Mix.

Can I use a Decklink quad card in a Pcie breakout box with a Thunderbolt 3 connection to bring in 4 cameras?

Would be really cool if I could.

Yes, I've done this with Decklink Quad card in a TB3 Sonnet chassis to an Asus ROG laptop. As long as your computer has enough CPU power, it should be fine.

Your system below, and mine is an updated version with identical case & features released two years later (updated specs in red)

Asus ROG VT752 (Asus ROG G752VSK)
i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.6 GHz (i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.8 Ghz)
32 GB Ram
GT-980M Video Card (GTX 1070 8GB mobile)
Thunderbolt 3 to Sonnet chassis (Sonnet SE III chassis)
Blackmagic Quad 2 card (Blackmagic Decklink Duo 2 card)
Blackmagic Decklink 4K Pro (Decklink Studio card)

What magic have you applied to permit 8 HD-SDI input/outputs & one 4K input/output on your Sonnet SE III?

I checked the vMix knowledgebase to ensure all was set-up correctly, latest nVidia display driver from ASUS,
and yet I see GPU Overload errors, audio/video dropouts and stuttering on the four I/Os of the Decklink Duo 2.

There is no Windows Store or Apps, no Live Tiles, no Cortana and no other User applets running n the background.
Thunderbolt cable is of high quality, and 0.5 metre in length. Three thunderbolt cables in my possession.
There are no errors reported in the Windows Event Viewer or WER.

Just vMix 23 latest version with the Sonnet SEIII for HD-SDI capture & output.

I recall IceStream posting a tip to another User "A single Thunderbolt 3 port is generally equivalent to a PCIe 3.0 x4 slot.
Many Thunderbolt enclosure manufacturers are touting connectivity for x8 and x16 cards, however, I think that is somewhat
misleading because as I understand it, the maximum connectivity you can get is x8 via a dual port connection (which they don't really disclose)."

Which version of the Intel Thunderbolt software/driver have you installed?
Perhaps that may be the issue at hand.

Hi Ross,

Good to hear from you.. Although my system has a BM Quad card, I have never used it "fully loaded"... but it's close. I have used it with the following config when doing Volleyball shows last year:

5 HD -SDI camera inputs to Quad card
1 Output to Video recorder from Quad card
1 Output from 4K card to monitor
4 channels of Replay
1 stream to Youtube 1080p30 @ 3MB

If I recall, the the CPU and GPU were around 65 % but don't quote me on that ! :) I never used the BM 4K card with camera Input as such. I installed it because it can output Video with Alpha when feeding a Ross switcher with Titles or when I need an additional Output to production monitors.

My portable kit is currently at a venue for a show this weekend, so I can't give you more accurate info. I can test it next week with fully loaded inputs to report the performance. I'll also look at the Thunderbolt software/driver version...

Have you checked the Nvidia settings. I think it might have some impact on performance. It seems to me I had to adjust some setting there as well..
