Dear vMix mates

I need som advice, especially from someone who has practical experience with Panasonic AW-HE40SWEJ9 and BirdDog P200.

I was offered 4 Panasonic AW-HE40SWEJ9. These cameras supports SDI and NDI-HX.

For 20% less, I was offered 4 BirdDog P200 - including a BirdDog controller (they have a campaign). These cameras supports SDI, HDMI and full NDI.

First seller tell me that Panasonic is much better quality. Second seller tells me that the Panasonic model is old, that Panasonic is better to fine tune colours, but BirdDog has full NDI, which I won't regret.

I would like to go with BirdDog, but is it a risky choice?

What would you do?

regards
Michael

The BirdDog P200 has SDI, HDMI and NDI outputs. The Panasonic AW-HE40SWEJ9 seems to only give you a choice of two, such as HDMI & NDI-HX, but not all three.

I did a shootout of P200 vs a HE38.

Out of the box settings, P200 has better blacks and seems to focus a bit better than the Panasonic.
The panasonic itself is a solid camera, but add'l cost to add on the NDIhx license.

I like the PTZ control in vmix with the birddogs vs. Panasonic. Since Birddog P200 isusing sony Visca over IP, it also has PTZ and Focus Control vs. Panasonic which only does PTZ.

We bought three BirdDog P200 and quickly sold them off.

The image quality is extremely disappointing compared to our usual setup on Canon C200/C300, Sony FS5 or even our old workhorse, the Sony PMW EX1.

For connectivity it can hardly be beaten but in the end you need some level of image quality, and the P200 do not deliver in this regard.

We compared the Birddog 100, the Birddog 200 with Panasonic HE 38, Panasonic HE40 and Panasonic UE70.
A Sony PXW-Z150 served as a reference.
Unfortunately, the Birddog cameras performed by far the worst.
The Panasonic cameras can be matched very closely to the reference camera. The HE-40 performed very well. If budget allows, the UE70 would be the best choice.
The Birddog 200 is a full NDI camera and has a lower latency than the Panasonic (NDI HX). Unfortunately, the Full NDI is not an advantage for the image quality of the Birddog cameras.
The Panasonic PTZ controller is very expensive and costs around 2400$, if you also want to control other camera brands it is worth looking at a Skaarhoj controller.

Once again, the statement proves to be true:
If you buy cheap, you buy twice.
