I would like to hear from others how you are communicating with your remote callers during a live stream event. I am aware of the chat feature however would like to know if there are more effective way to do this.

You can do this also very simple via an external app on a mobile device. Take Zello as an example. It's one of many Walkie-Talkie apps that allow a direct communication in groups.

You could also use the Audio busses in vMIx along with the Panel Builder software as show by one user.
