After having used vMix successfully for hundreds of live streams, we’re having a new scenario that needs to be figured out.

Due to Corona, we’re streaming a funeral this Saturday for a client and the online part is just the typical setup.

There will, however, be 100 participants locally, split into groups of ten, across the cemetery and they need to watch the video as well BUT without the 20-30 sec delay from vMix => Vimeo and “back”.

I’m thinking about sending Program Out to NDI on a local network, we’re setting up at the event and then have the guests watch this on their phones.

Can you please comment on this? What would be the best way to handling this?

I can recommend you take a look at http://www.sienna-tv.com/ndi/ndiweblink.html

It basically turns an NDI stream into a web-compatible stream for the local network and the produced stream can be viewed on smartphones using browser with the link to the stream given from the app.
The delay will only be a second or so - even less in some scenarios.

I'll have a look but even a second latency will probably be too noticeable as they can hear and see the ceremony going on as well. I guess that amount of latency would be annoying to them.

Also, I cannot ask 100 people to pay for the viewer apps in the App Store / Google Play.

I'm thinking of Wowza could be a solution or maybe a local Jitsiserver.

100 smartphone with NDI stream and a bit rate of 100 Mbps per stream?

NDI Network Bandwidth

NDI operates most efficiently in a dedicated network with high bandwidth and high availability. This is in contrast to unmanaged environments such as the public Internet or networks where video rides along with data without priority.

While a single stream of HD video can easily be delivered on a Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps) network, Gigabit (1000 Mbps) networks are essential in production workflows. A typical NDI stream consisting of 1080i HD video yields a data rate up to 100 Mbps per stream. This extremely efficient stream is designed to have very low latency and allows multiple streams to be stacked together on a single Gigabit network.

What viewer app? The stream is viewed in the browser as mentioned.

I can recommend this app: https://garaninapps.com/secondstream
I used it one time and it worked very well.

How bout feeding the output to a Zoom or WebEx Meeting? If not playing music, might be a good way to go. Then distribute the link to everyone on their cell phones.

You can use NDI studio Monitor with vMix. Enable NDI output on vMix and use Studio Monitor to cast vMix video to each instances. Each connection will take up to 125Mbps so you might want to cast 720p instead of 1080p.

Hmm, 100 might be delivered from an internal wowza. But it adds stress to the network.

General thinking:
Realtime = webRTC -> dial into the reference app and send PGM from vmix into it
eCDN = Hive, Ramp...
multicast

I would use Mistserver (free) and RTMP. When I am internal I get the latency down to just a few seconds.

what you ask is not possible. you will always get a lag of several seconds or will need a huge bandwidth requirement.

Sure, this is possible and this is what an eCDN is build for. Distributing internally behind (view from outside) the firewall.
