Because of the Corona situation, we got quite a few new clients, needing their events to be streamed instead of people attending physically at the venues.

One of the jobs was a conference with 3 parallel "tracks", so with a few hours of notice, we had to set up 3 complete production kits.

As we only have 2 vMix licensens and the economy is totally out of control for the moment, I tried OBS for the 3rd kit.

I'm really surprised to see how much of a performance difference there is between the two solutions.

Not talking about features but performance / quality of output.

We used the same "everything" for the 3 setups. Same cameras, same streaming platform (Vimeo), same bitrate / fps / resolution, same split screen (fullscreen PowerPoint + camera PIP i lower thirds) etc. but the OBS output is noticeably lower quality.

It's like the video is a bit choppy and 25fps even though we did set it up for 25fps. Also, the recording is lower quality.

I know this is a vMix forum, but is this something we should expect or should OBS churn out the same quality as vMix as things equal?

in OBS if you are ingesting sources larger or smaller than your stage, OBS uses an algorithm to do the work and you choose one of three settings. this causes significant quality issues.

vMix does a much better job at handling this.

suggestion in OBS, do not up or downscale stage to output. you could use a vMix trial on the third machine for 60 days until you can afford to buy?
