hi martin,

i now have a system up with 4 BM capture cards, two intensities and two mini recorders. all is well, although i get very confused as what inout is what card.

i tried renaming the input cards in the registry, giving them a friendly name. this name is now active in the device list.

i thought maybe vmix will use this name, but no!

can you give me a method naming input devices so that i can recognize them in the vmix input list. i want to be able to select exactly the card i need, and mark them accordingly on the card itself.

what registry parameter can i use, if any or is there a way to set it in vmix itself.

greetings,
stefan

I don't think there is any reliable way to rename a capture device, it would be up to the driver to offer this functionality.

hi Martin,

where does vmix get the device name? could it be changed to use a FriendlyName if provided by the registry.

a friendly name can be added by changing / adding this to the registry of the specific device. just follow this procedure:

ad friendly name to device

(ps this will change the name in the device list - just remember to start the regedit as administrator to execute this procedure).

if vmix could also check for and use if available the FriendlyName of a device, the capture input would then be more useable.

greetings, stefan

Maybe simply add a description row to the "drop down list" like this:

just to clarify: i have 4 bm decklink cards and they are all called the same with a different nr. decklink 1 decklink 2 etc.

when i add a bm shuttle the naming can be different, what is 1what is 2, etc. when i swapp a card then all is changed again.

so i need to be able to assign a name to the card linked to the card directly preferably in the registry. this way i can always recognize the card in the input.

just giving the card a name in vmix won' t solve the issue. then i would still have to check the inputs one by one every time i have changed something...

when using different cards there is no problem, but where does vmix get those names, how does it know it is a decklink and the other an avermedia etc. on that naming level a name could be assigned.

i think that is the only good method.

so Martin, any ideas where vmix gets the input names and can this be set to a registry assigned (friendly) name, as in the example...

greetings, stefan

The names come from the blackmagic driver and the order does appear
to change every now and then so i'm not sure how they are numbering them.

h2video,
I asked BMD that very question a month ago.
Here's their response.

"The DeckLink device ordering appears to be by the UUIDs of the DeckLink Video Capture filters in the system. Unfortunately these values are fixed. Edward would need to contact the software company that wrote the software and request that they try ordering DeckLink devices by name rather than UUID."

I would love to be able to in the settings panel.
Organize in any order and label the inputs as I see fit. i.e. "Input 1, Input 2, or Cam1, Cam2, Computer1, Laptop1" then have this reflect in capture drop down.
When looking a the physical order as to the order they appear in Capture device drop down these are very different.
I do like the fact that cards are now listed in order but the physical order is usually from bottom up 1,3,2,5,4 or from top down 5,1,3,2,4 and all this
Depending on motherboard and card type the order changes as well.

So to be able to map them in a configuration panel would help me and my clients tremendously.

i agree!! and would be expected from a product such as blackmagic to be able to support this kind of flexibility.

maybe martin could be persuaded to have a look what kind of tricks could be applied, maybe as suggested a Friendly name could be read from the registry and used in combination with the default method.

otherwise we would have to pressure bm for a sollution but that's a long shot...

Hello, has there been any progress on this?
We use multiple Magewell capture cards connected to one laptop and having them all displayed with the same name in VMix really complicates things.
Being able to use Friendly name or just assigning a text description directly in VMix, as someone suggested above, would be great!
