Hello,
I have a CAnnon HV20 with an HDMI output. I am wanting to capture live video into my imac. How do I hook the camera to the computer?
-Can I use just a regular HDMI cable with a thunderbolt adapter?
-Do I need an expensive video conversion box of some type (please say no)?

I am running a video mixing program called vmix. www.vmix.com.au. I have been able to capture the video through the firewire output on the camera into the thunderbolt but the quality is low. I am hoping I can get a higher quality into my computer through the HDMI
Any help is hugely appreciated.

I'm not familiar with the imac, but it looks like your options might be limited and/or costly...
You will need a capture card of some sort that is compatible with the imac.
These links & videos might give you some insight:

Hope that helps

For the firewire output, is the camera set to output DV (which is an SD signal) or HDV (which is High Def)? I've had good results capturing HDV thru firewire on a PC.

Good luck.

I have it set at HDV...not a noticeable difference in quality BUT there is now a sag time about a second and a half. Do you think there will be a delay if I use HDMI?

Firewire will always have a delay. An HDMI capture card should not have a delay.

Ok, I just purchased the Ultrasonic Mini Recorder from Blackmagicdesign. I have my Cannon HV20 set to HDV. Output HDMI into the mini recorder. Thunderbolt out into my imac. In Vmix, I create a new input..."capture" but Vmix does not recognize my camera. Any ideas?
Thank you

Make sure the latest Windows drivers for the UltraStudio are installed and the input will show up as "Decklink Video Capture" in vMix.
