I have used vMix for a few months, and just started having an error on all video file inputs except WMV format. The error received is:

Video could not be connected. Please Make sure an appropriate
video codec for this format is installed.

AddNewInput.CVR
The operation cannot be performed because the pins are not connected.

1.) I have uninstalled and installed V9 and am experiencing the same issue.
2.) I have Installed the Haali Splitter and ffmpeg
3.) I have had these video files playing for months on this same system.

Running on
i7-3615QM CPU @ 2.30GHz
8GB RM
64 Bit Windows 7 Home Premium

What am I missing here? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Mark

You can troubleshoot your codecs using GSpot.

I would start with a WMV file. Inside GSpot, choose File > Open, and pick a WMV file that works. Note that under the "Audio" and "Video" sections, GSpot reports "Codec(s) are installed" in green.

Now repeat, but choose a file that you're having problems with. Now, GSpot reports "Status Undetermined" in yellow, because DirectShow cannot create a graph to render the audio and/or video streams. This equates to the "pins are not connected" error reported by DirectShow and surfaced in vMix.

Your goal is to turn the yellow boxes green:

  • Begin with the obvious stuff like reinstalling Haali Splitter and FFMPEG.
  • If that doesn't help, examine Control Panel > Programs, and sort by "Installed On". Look for anything recent that may have installed a codec with a high merit.
  • You can also choose System > List Filters inside GSpot, and unregister anything unfamiliar.

After 4 hours of struggling with the problem, 10 minutes and GSpot had identified the problem and I am now importing and playing all the formats I have. Thanks for the heads up on this. Amazing what happens when you have the right tools.

Could you enlighten us, what caused the problem? Maybe your findings could help other users as well...

As Close as I can determine, I had upgrade to a 3rd party sound mixer application "On-Stage" software audio mixing board and TrinitySoftware's HDMax3 at the same time I downloaded and installed the Beta Version of vMix 9. ONE of these apps, I believe it was HDMax, installed RealNatworks Real Player and overwrote several codec files and/or assignments as part of the installation.

I had tried to change the codec settings in vMix but ended up with a splattering of black pixels and video that faded to black after 5 seconds. Not the intended correction.

It took both GSpot and a similar app "Codec Tweak Tool" found at http://codecguide.com/download_other.htm to find, identify, and reset the codec settings. I started with resetting to all of the recommended settings and was able to import video immediately (Had to restart vMix)

    Thanks again for the assist.

I had this problem with vMix 22 - I think windows update broke it. Thanks for the information - "Codec Tweak Tool" found at http://codecguide.com/download_other.htm fixed the problem for me.

Hi Giles,I'm having the same issue. Can you explain exactly what you did in "codec tweak tool" to cure the problem?
