Hi Martin!

been playing around with this new codec provided with vMix 22. So far I like it... FYI 1080p25 produces 105Mbits recordings... Very low footprint on CPU, that's great (compared to ProRes). Not tried with MultiCorder yet...

Few questions and feedback:

- I believe it belongs to the "intermediate" codec family like ProRes or DNxHD, right ? Is it IntraFrame or GOP compression ? Could we have tech specs about it ?

- It seems there is no way to set bitrates/quality at all. I presume it's all about internal settings regarding source resolution, right ?

- I can only play vMixAVI files with MPC, but FFMPEG/FFPLAY, VLC or native Win10 video player won't play (except audio stream). Will this codec be provided as a standalone installer in future? Will it come with a way to be added/compiled with FFMPEG?

- I guess it won't be supported by YouTube or other OVPs (for video uploads) natively so far ?

- Not tested yet with NLEs. Will report later about Premiere and Resolve support if a standalone version is released. I don't have NLE installed on my vMix computers

Thanks for the excellent work again!

vMix Video Codec is an intermediate intraframe codec similar to ProRes and DNxHD.

Technically speaking it is a very simple DCT block codec with an extremely fast hybrid RLE/Exp-Golomb entropy coder.
It is adaptive bitrate based on content, but with a fixed maximum bitrate based on resolution to prevent unexpectedly large file sizes in complex scenes.

It will work with any program that supports Windows installed AVI codecs. This excludes apps like FFMPEG and VLC for the time being, though if the format
becomes popular enough an FFMPEG contributor will no doubt add support in time (and we will be happy to assist with any technical information they need to achieve this).

Its designed purely for Windows NLE work and will need to be transcoded first for uploading elsewhere.

Regards,

Martin

I tried the AVI Codec and the recording worked fine for me in Premiere Pro CC 2019, but not in Vegas Movie Studio 15. The file loaded, but no video and only 1 second of audio. If there is a fix for the Movie Studio that would be much appreciated.

Also did some system shutdowns while recording with the AVI codec, and the recording was indeed fail tolerant!

Thanks.

Hello all, tried the AVI codec in BMD Resolve 15 and won't import. I assume will need to transcode but any suggestions which format would be best?

Regards,
Henry
