Poor quality recording and external monitor output

I'm using vmix to do my live switching for webcast I'm doing of sports. The webcast quality is acceptable for the webcast (720 by 480) but I am also recording to my computers hard drive and out putting to an external dvr (also in 720 by 480) which both look soft as in VHS in 6 hour mode. Is this normal and if not how can I fix it?
Listed are the devices I am using and the vmix settings I'm using.

Cameras:Sony NX5u (2 of them) using the composite video outputs at 480i
Laptop: Asus G750JW-BBI7N05, Intel i7 – 4700HQ Processor, 8Gb of DDR3 memory, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M graphics (2GB of DDR 5 memory), Thunderbolt
Capture device: EMS VC006AUSB (6 video channel CVBS usb3 capture device – 30 frames per second at D1, device is similar to the Magewell X1006AUSB)
Output Device: Blackmagic Shuttle using Thunderbolt at 720 by 480 with composite out to dvd/dvr recorder, recording to dvr.
Vmix settings:
Input.
Capture – video 1 ( Ems device)
Resolution – 720x480
System - ntsc 59.94 or 29.97,
Input – Default
Video Format – Default
Deinterlacing – Blend
Audio Device – same as video device
(use VMR is not checked)
on the settings (upper right corner of screen)
Outputs – Full screen and Recording/External are set to Output and everything is checked
Performance – App Priority – High... Output format set to UYVY...Video Render – VMR9... Synch Output is checked and Enable Direct3D9Ex is also checked
External Output – Vmix video and External Renderer are both checked
System – Vimix is at NTSC 59.94 or 29.97i and External is at NTSC 59.94i
Device - Decklink Video Render
Port – Composite
Recording to computer setup (through vmix)
Using AVI
Size – 720 by 480
System – Ntsc 59.94i or 29.97p
Codec – Decklink MJPEG Compressor
File Format - AVI

Would you be able to create a short AVI recording and email it to us? You can use https://fileobject.com/ to upload the file. How does the quality of the video in the vMix preview and output windows compare to the final recording? Regards, Martin vMix

What I'm seeing in the preview and output window looks good compared to what I'm seeing on the external output (text is also bad there)and the recorded media.
Can I send you somethung that I recorded live this weekend? It will be about 6 hours before I can get it to you

Your system looks great, I would say its all in the settings.
What's the bit rate your streaming and recording?
Also if you are going out to external monitor. Is this a HD LCD monitor your sending a SD signal to?
If so it will look like garbage because the picture is being stretched 4 times its actual size. plus being converted
back to interlaced fielded video.
If you are coming in 480i I would leave everything (Capture, Recording, output)set to 480i and let FME deinterlace for stream.
If the stream bit rate is 800 or better it should look pretty good at 640x480 or 640x360 depending.
Let FME record the file and use VLC to play it back at 100% resolution not full screen to see stream quality.
If you play it back at full screen then back away from monitor about 10' :-)

Ed, thanks for the imfo, the stream looks fine but what is being recorded to the external recorder and to my harddrive is soft. Even tried using the Black Magic shuttle and got the same results. On the Asus laptop I'm using the trial version and don,t know if that should make a difference. Plan on upgrading it to the HD version if I can get a better quality recording so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I would try recording as mpg say 8Mbps. also when you play it back in media play or vlc play @ 100% size no larger. If you run it through FME save the f4v or flv file. FME tends to ad contrast. Any time you deinterlace a 480i video stream it tends to get soft. vMix does have a sharpen feature. FYI the trial is no difference from purchased version. The only other thing I can say is coming in composite will also cause lower quality so if you can go with s-video or better component there will be a big improvment and for best SDI Plus the cameras you have are HD , if you can connect at 720p the picture will be fantastic. I've been build systems for vMix for a while and all I hear is how amazing the picture looks from my systems. www.streambreeze.netBest of luck
