I am looking at a project that could really use the output of vMix to support NDI multicast. I need high quality output in several locations on an enterprise multicast enabled network. Is it something that is difficult? I thought that NDI 3.5+ just supported it. Other users on the forum have confirmed that it is not working on the vMix output.

Thanks,
Steve

PS. I do admit that there would have to be a BIG button to turn it on. I have crashed several networks by doing some FFMPEG multicast without confirming that the network was enabled for multicast with IGMP snooping turned on :-).

Hi Steve

Do you really think that a 125 Mbits NDI feed offers superior image quality than a 25 Mbits TS/UDP ? > for viewing only for sure

Besides this requires a NDI player installed on all hosts on the network instead of a basic VLC instance... Not to mention corporate computers are maybe not powerful enough...

Unless it's for production use cases, I really cannot consider NDI a good delivery protocol for end_users.

I give this FR my +1 but I'm very suspicious how usable and appropriate this would be in real life

Guillaume

This would be 4K streams in a Museum Quality environment - yes

Studio Monitor is easier to install and takes less knowledge to operate than VLC. NDI takes less CPU than H265 for 4K.

Also looking at some cases for alpha-channel overlay in this.

Also in Production Trucks, many times the signal goes to several places. Multicast would be very valuable.

Thanks,
Steve

Maybe for encoding, but for playback just about every GPU has H26x hardware acceleration that offloads the CPU burden.

I share DWAMs view on this. NDI is not really for delivery. That said, people always adapt things to their specific purposes.

For live sport, enabling multicast would allow less resource intensive outputs to commentator and intermission host monitors, as well as feeding in arena screens at sub-second latency - crucial for covering live sport.

This is already possible, Multicast is controlled with the NDI Access Manager program installed with NDI Tools.
