I need to project live camera output on a big screen in 720p50.The distance will be about 10 meters from the first row.
The audience will see and hear the person speaking and simultaneously also the camera output on the screen. There will be some video delay on screen.
How much delay do I get from vMix? Is this a fixed value or does it change with the amount of processing (like PIP, lower thirds, different recording codecs, ISO recording etc.)?
How do you minimize delay in your vMix setup?
And how much delay can be tolerated? What is your experience in such situation?
thanks for your input

hi peter,
i would recommend to put through the camera signal straight to the screen if you can. when you use an intensity card of shuttle you can use the output as athrough put and go without delay to the projector.
simultaniously you can record on vmix. using the output from vmix after procesing will always result in a delay.
greetings, stefan

Hi Stefan, straight to the screen would certainly keep the delay very low, but I still need to bring in lower thirds and some video clips, transitions etc. Unfortunately can't do it without vMix.
thanks, Peter

I topically see 6 to 9 frames when all things are equal. This is common with all the computer based switchers I have worked with. As long as scaling is kept to a minimum. Basically all cameras, content must match system settings. If not the processing delay goes up quickly.

I found that vMix has arround 2 frames of delay. I suppose this is for simple in/out configuration, without any processing applied.
vMix works with software buffers for genlock, I wonder if they are included in the 2 frames. Also, if camera is genlocked, are these buffers still used or not?
As an example, the Aja ROI DVI to HD-SDI scaler has anything from 1 field to 2,5 frames of delay, depending from scaling functions used. On the other hand, a simple HD-SDI to HDMI converter (Aja HA5) has less than 1 line of delay.
Maybe Martin should jump in and explain.
