We are setting up our new auditorium with full NDI and in the outer concourse, there are 4 smart TV's. Can we simply hook them to our main Ethernet PoE switch and have them be recognized as sources? From there, can we assign various input sources to them? From what I'm seeing, it looks fairly straightforward, but want to be sure we're not missing anything.

No, TV's do not have NDI built into them yet. You will need either a computer running (Newtek NDI Video Monitor or similar) or an NDI decoder like the (BirdDog Studio NDI or Splyce or Flyk or Mini D-Streamerâ„¢ NDI®/HDMI) to convert NDI to HDMI for each TV.

I had a project where I pushed NDI to some monitors. I used these SFF Windows 10 PCs. They are under $200 each, have real Gigabit Ethernet and hang on the back of the monitors. They played 1080p60 to the display using about 40% of available CPU.

I do a similar thing. I use a number of older PC's (Hidden) to drive large screens. Then run NDI Studio Monitor on then to pick up the stream.

Note that if want to stream to a large number of devices you will want to use multicast. That means your network and switches must support it as well.

I think I'm a bit confused on Studio Monitor. What does Studio Monitor do that the VMix NDI does not? Wouldn't the VMix NDI pick up the older PC's (provided they're hooked up to a network that the VMix is running on)?

Each PC at the monitor has to run Studio Monitor or similar software and/or hardware (and not vMix) to display NDI video on screen then output it to HDMI to tv to display video.
