Hello, I'm switching over to vMix. In my case this requires switching from Mac to PC so figuring out various PC specs. I need portability, so designing an optimal notebook.

Budget can go up to $4k, looking for lots of overhead if possible for a 4 camera input along with vMix Call that can simultaneously record and stream in 1080p. Plus graphic animations.

I was looking at Intel I7 6-core CPU and GTX 1070 GPU, but then ran across this system with Xeons and Quadro. vMix build discussions almost never talk about Xeon/Quadro, but typically Xeons/Quadros are considered to be the best. Is there any downside to Xeon/Quadro with vMix vs. the traditional I7/Geforce builds?

This is the system I'm looking at getting:

Thinkpad
NVIDIA Quadro P4200 8GB
Intel® Xeon® E-2176M 6 core processor with vPro™ (2.70GHz, up to 4.40GHz with Turbo Boost Technology, 12MB Cache)
32GB RAM
512 SSD Drive
17.3” UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) IPS anti-glare, 400nits

As oppose to a gaming machine with:

Processor: Core i7-8750H Hexa-Core (6 Cores) 3.9 - 4.1GHz
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX1070 8G GDDR5

...or a RAZER BLADE PRO - 4K (GTX 1080) - 512GB


And is there any any downside to a 17" 4k monitor, does that drain resources needed elsewhere in the system?

Get the Quadro! That way you can use hardware encoding on all streams and recordings. GTX lineup is limited to only 2 of these.

Regarding the 17" 4K screen.. We have HP zBook 17 G4's with 1080p and 17" screens and we are happy with those. I know for a fact, that on my editing rig, which has 27" 4K screen, everything gets tiny.. like really tiny on native resolution. I'd go fo the 1080p on 17" display if possible.
Note.. I still have problems with display scaling which is terrible in Windows.

Also, add a second SSD to the Thinkpad. 1TB for example, you will thank me later.

I'd be interested to you exactly what the P4200 can do.

According to the nVidia specs it has one instance of NVENC, but unrestricted sessions. It's surely more capable than the GTX, but how much exactly? How many 1080p60 encodes will it sustain?

Hmmm...it's closer than I thought. Here's a Passmark comparison:

The GTX are incrementally more capable than the P4200. But the P4200 has unrestricted NVENC sessions. That means more access to hardware encoders, which substantially offloads CPU burden.

Well, we have P3000's in our laptops and my test results:
vMix master 1080p60
Recording MP4 at 1080p60, 8Mbps, H264High
Stream 1: 1080p60, 8.5Mbps, Audio 128Kbps, High profile, level 5.1, preset veryfast, strict CBR checked
Stream 2: 1080p60, 8.0Mbps, Audio 196Kbps, High profile, level 5.1, preset veryfast, strict CBR checked
Stream 3: 1080p60, 9.0Mbps, Audio 256Kbps, High profile, level 4.1, preset veryfast, strict CBR checked

All Hardware Encoder boxes ticked. This mess of the bitrates is just to make sure, every quality is encoded separately.

GPU is at 92%.

P4200 has about 2x the preformance of P3000, so I believe, it will handle what you throw at it.

Not so much info about p4200, but if similar to p4000 it has only 1x nvenc chip, you will get same Hardware enconding performance than a p2000.
About 92% of gpu, is it encoder part or gpu part?.

Three 1080p60 hardware encodes means that the P4000 bests that GTX in any case.
