Hello,

I'm very new to the PTZ/NDI/vMix integration stuff and I'm trying to pitch a fully NDI based system to my church instead of their going with a non NDI system. We're currently limping along on a lightning-blasted Vaddio (non HD) and VISCA based system that was the best of the most basic options at the time.

So far we already have a vMix HD license, but I'm kind of lost on how to integrate control with NDI cameras. I'm hoping to be able to utilize single wire communications to the cameras (Power, Video, Control). My research on vMix's integrated PTZ system is A) confusing and B) looks limited in terms of control compatibility.

What I'd like to offer:
2x joystick control with PTZ and variable sensitivity (independent control of 2 cameras at a time)
6x NDI cameras (probably PTZoptics 20x NDI)
vMix centralized video switching and recording/streaming
Touchscreen interface with vMix (know how to do)
Remote control of cameras via vMix if emergency arises
Physical button controller for vMix features (like xKeys)

Has anyone dabbled in this sort of setup using NDI/Vmix yet?

Hi

I’m sure others will offer their suggestions. But be sure to watch this video about vMix uofpgrade if a church, including NDI

That video covers a little bit of what we're doing, although my venue is much larger with more inputs/outputs/moving parts which necessitates something more powerful than straight presets. I love presets, but our staging is largely too dynamic to use them effectively.

We need the dual input method because we're syncing in crowd shots with the main program- and making one operator manage both crowd and program has been impossible.

I've even stuck iPhones with NDICam on tripods to demonstrate the modular and superior nature of NDI.

Also, if there are any integrators who do this, I'm interested in references.

that's all pretty plug and play I think most people have moved to full ip now, check the vmix hardware comparability for which PTZ cameras can be controlled through vmix. can I ask - have you used these PTZ cameras a few times? what would you be covering with 6 ptzs and only using ptzs?

I've not used any of the NDI capable PTZ cameras yet. We are currently using a 5 camera Vaddio PTZ system with Sony EVI-D70's. We're feeding that into a Blackmagic Ultrastudio 4K which then feeds vMix. We will be strictly PTZ- no fixed cameras unless they're for some sort of monitoring feed.

Ah k I was just wondering if you were planning to cover something like sports with just ptz, for this church scenario they're perfect.

The pitch would be, this is an ip production workflow and everything's moving to that, the technology is only going to get better and already has with ndi hx, which pushes the same quality down a smaller pipe (and therefore works better for wifi) you need this setup to future proof yourselves.
Also every camera and computer will be visible to every other computer or device on your system/network (using apps and software to view them) its expandable without needing extra devices and cables to send things everywhere. for example, once you have this all set up and you decide to buy another computer to add titles or control a certain aspect, you would just buy another computer, plug in your internet cable and everything will appear (through monitoring apps/vmix software).

NDI works on a gigabit network, the signal is 100mbs.. NDI HX which is new, is I think 15mbs. So you need to have a solid network (gigabit switch with POE and cat6 or better, but you'll be alright if it's cat5e **do not go and install cat5e I'm just saying it'll do if you've already got a network installed**)

You need at least a Gigabit POE switch (more than 8 to future proof because you're filling that up straight away)
the cameras are then powered by the same internet cable (cat6) that it's sending a signal down - because of your Power Over Ethernet (POE) Switch, so thats again another example of less cables and less clutter.

to understand vmix controlling ptz, firstly vmix control the ptz optics cameras you are looking at buying - but vmix does not control all ptz cameras.
using the vmix way of controlling ptz you can save 1/2/3/4+ different angles from one of your ptz cameras which you can choose to cut to, so you get a lot of value from well positioned ptz cameras which don't constantly need operating to give you choices of angles. there are a couple of simple videos on how to create these virtual angles on youtube- officially called virtual inputs.

To be a bit blunt if you need it, if anyone decides to go out and buy a non ndi system then it's because of not understanding ndi. If you understand ndi, (and its simpler than a non ndi set up) then you wouldn't do anything non ndi.

Yep, my main sticking point at this moment is figuring out how to get acceptable joystick control integrated. Nobody wants to use Xbox controllers to control vMix, they're too used to the Vaddio control interface. The xKeys would...almost...be perfect, except that they use Z-rotation instead of Z-axis for zoom control. Need variable control of all PTZ functions. Presets work great until someone decides to go off script on a whim and walk around.

I think, and someone please correct me, you can use two mid devices with vMix. So you could use xKeys for everything but the PTZ camera and find a suitable joystick for the PTZ functions of the cameras.

Here’s a new vMix training video about PTZ cameras that might be overall helpful.
