I am investigating whether I can use more than 2 outputs with VMIX. Effectively for the testing I have been doing I can output Fullscreen to 2 monitors based on the configuration to two different HDMI outputs. The Video card in the machine is an Nvidia 1050ti - so it has 4 outputs, at the moment I just duplicate monitor 1 and 4 in order to get Fullscreen on another monitor - But often in the testing I have found that I need to get 3 different types of output to 3 different monitors, and from a HDMI video card it also means if I want output in SDI (for distance.) I need to output HDMI, use a HDMI to SDI converter through the SDI then back from SDI to HDMI.

1. FULLSCREEN 1 - for public display coming off "OUTPUT" - effectively the Primary output
2. FULLSCREEN 2 - Multiview - for Production monitoring at bigger scale (remote monitoring.)

Next I also sometimes need to see Preview large scale on a 3rd monitor, and now I have found a need to output to an external production system.

What I am thinking of doing is getting a Decklink Mini Monitor which I know I can output using "External" to and also just have a Direct SDI outlet - but can I do External and Fullscreen at the same time??...What is the difference between the two, I can't seem to find any mention of them being used in combination with each other, or whether External is lacking or has extra abilities than Fullscreen (like maybe it doesn't carry Audio signal...etc.) Or is the advantage simply the fact you can set the Output size and frame rate, etc. But in doing so does this affect anything else? I recall having set it once and got an error that my output did not match my project frame rates...or something similar (like when I have an 1080i camera input and try use it for a 720p replay...)

Any advice in this area would be greatly appreciated.

Hi nicademus,

There are several details different from Fullscreen to External output.

Fullscreens are rendered by the graphics card.
External outputs are rendered on the capture card (i guess it is not called a capture card when it's outputting, ha).

The render time on the external output is normally a bit longer, but normally it is not noticeable.

The external outputs are easier to setup than the fullscreen, since Windows take part in controlling the additional screens that you need for fullscreen (e.g. the refresh-rate, screen resolution and so on). External outputs are configured only in vMix (of course when the capture cards is installed correctly).

I recommend using a external output for the display for the audience, and then you can use the fullscreens for your production, such as multiviewer, preview, etc..

As I remember, you can look forward to vMix 2X - the next version of vMix, including more Fullscreen and External outputs! :-)

Best regards

2X - I'm intrigued...Additional outputs would be Absolutely fantastic - that for me is the one thing lacking at the moment (besides more than 4 overlays...But I know a way around that one with adding Overlays and sources to inputs - which you can use up to 8 layers on...it's fiddly...but it works.)

I like the idea of using the External because with the Decklink I can output 10 bit uncompressed out of Vmix - so I can either use for Production recording (to Atomos devices, hardware switching, etc.) I have also noticed sometimes with Fullscreen that the image is jittery - presumably the refresh rate not matching the Frame rate - but I shouldn't have that issue if outputting in SDI uncompressed and converting at the destination with an SDI to HDMI. rather than allowing Windows to mismatch the frame rate with refresh rate.

Out of interest - do you have a rough ETA for 2x? Will there be pricing drops and extra categories for pricing? That is another thing which will hurt by the time I choose to buy - the price pushes me out of the market - I don't need all the Pro features, but I do need 4 overlays and do need HD, etc...

I am just an ordinary vMix user myself, and I don't know any specific details on release dates or similar, but as I understand should vMix 20 be released this fall. Regarding price drops, you should not expect it. vMix is simply already low priced, and more and more features get packed into it every month, so I would not except the price to change.

vMix includes free updates to the software to the upcoming versions for a long time (more than a year) when you buy, so you should just go buy it right away :-)
