Does vMix have a built in ability to set a marker in the recording? Something that will be recognized by editing software?
If not, would this work?
Tie to a key a sequence an input with an overlay that drops say a graphic corner or edge that I can crop out.
Are there other ways to do this?

AFAIK the shortcut WriteDurationToRecordingLog is what we have currently (v18).
There are a few feature requests on related functions (eg create a so called "Edit lists, EDL" for the Recorder and/or MultiCorder. Can't find those requests right now, but they are still being discussed.

EDIT: I found the logs. It will work well enough for my needs.
I came looking for this feature as well. They way I format my show, I need the beginning and end chopped off and want to hand that to an editor. Where does the WriteDurationToRecordingLog info go? I couldn't find that info. It would be nice if it was named the same as the file being created and in the same place as the file being created.
