Hello!

I have a Akitio TB3 expansion box and was thinking to put Magewell Quad HDMI capture card on it. And then to my Asus GL702VM laptop with TB3 port.

But now I found out that Asus TB port is only 2 lane/20Gbit (not a 4 lane/40Gbit) as Magewell card is 4 lane card.

Could it still work with this setup ?

This post was related to speed issues with TB3 and is about the same laptop with Thunderbolt3.

For vMix purposes, you only need 10gbps for up to 8 1080p cameras, so 20gbps should be more than enough.

It seems from checking other forms that manufacturers sometimes are installing Thunderbolt3 with Thunderbolt2 chipsets hence no full 40Gbps speed.

This decision by Intel may help us in the future.

The only way to utilize 40gbps of the thunderbolt 3 is to have a PCIE 4x 3.0 card in the thunderbolt chassis. 99% of all the capture cards out there are only PCIE version 2.

PCIE 2.0 4x is 20Gbps and you can expect any 4x card to work as expected on a thunderbolt 3 20Gbps link or a thunderbolt 2 link.

I have been able to add 8 1080p50 over both Thunderbolt 2 and Thunderbolt 3 20Gbps using a decklink quad 2 card.

there is a lot of confusion about tb3. and the akitio box is also picky.

maybe for vmix is does not matter 5 - 10 - 20 or 40 gbps but i guess the akitio needs a true tb3 40gbps connection.

remember, this is a new technique and the akitio box still has design issues ( check the other threat about this box ) so it will be good to report back any results.

I've had no problems with Asus laptops and Akitio boxes.

Asus GLV502 (20Gbps TB3) + Akitio Thunder3 works
Asus G752VS (40Gbps TB3) + Akitio Thunder3 works
Asus G750JW (10Gbps TB1) + Akitio Thunder2 works

The 40Gbps chip works just the same as the 20Gbps chip due to the reason mentioned above.

All links tested to their maximum with a decklink quad 2 card.

I did test a MSI Titan TB3 40gbps laptop that wouldn't connect to the akitio Thunder3 at all however.

@Thremir

Appreciate the Thunderbolt test numbers you've posted.

Did you do any other tests with the MSI Titan TB3?

I tried for a couple of days to get anything on my decklink quad 2, all devices were shown in Windows Device Manager, but they had some errors there ("Could not start code 10" if I remember correctly), but nothing. Tried a dozen of TB drivers, Decklink Driver, NVM firmwares etc. for 2+ days, nothing. Changed to the Asus PCs mentioned above, plug and play.

I wrote out a lot of information in this thread:
