I tried to save to file and also stream live through FME this weekend, and my display adapter on the laptop kept crashing, hence crashing vmix.

I got an HP laptop, i7, 2630QM @2.00ghz with 8g ram. and I believe 1 gig video ram

do I need something better ?

Make sure you have all the latest windows updates and the latest drivers for your graphics card.
If you still have an issue it means there is some faulty hardware.

Try disabling powerplay for the Graphics Card.
It worked in my case.

And as you are working on a laptop: keep an eye on the temperatures. Many laptops have bad cooling and will overheat when the workload is high, and overheating can cause data failures in all kinds of chips and busses as well, thus forcing crashes. Maybe your machine simply isn't suitable for the job (sometimes it's enough to remove dust from the airways, or to elevate the laptop from the table, to let the cooling air flow).
