I have a job coming up where we need to stream to the far North (Yukon & Yellowknife) where the viewers can only access the Internet using slow satellite connections.
Can anyone suggest what combination of video dimension and bitrate would be best for this type of webcast?
I'm not sure if anyone with faster connections could also be watching locally - so maybe an ABR stream possibly?

It would depend on the speeds you can get via satellite. If you're streaming to something like YouTube Live which adapts the quality based on internet connection it shouldn't matter, their connect will define what the quality they get.

It wouldn't be YouTube for sure.
I'm just wondering - what are the typical satellite connection speeds? Are there any typical speeds or do they vary widely depending on the provider?
I want to cater for at least the lowest common denominator since its very important that all viewers should be able to view it without any issues.

If you expect a wide variance in bandwidth, then it makes sense to use youtube as it transcodes on the fly. This is assuming you do not have a CDN currently.

Also, you want to stream as high a quality as you can comfortably assuming that you are transcoding at the server. If your bandwith is limited I would try 854x480 at 1 mbps. I did an emergency broadcast via cellphone and it was actually ok.

I do have a CDN where I can do ABR streaming on the fly - and YouTube may not be an option since this webcast needs to be kept password protected.
My upload bandwidth is not limited - it is the limited download speed available to the viewers that would be the issue.

If your upload bandwidth is not limited, run 2 streams.

The one kjones9999 suggested (854x480p), and a 640x360p at 700-750kbps for those with slower satellite connections.

650 kbps - 720X480
400 kbps - 450X320
200 kbps - 240X120

Do you think that's carrying it too far?
(My upload will be SD and not widescreen)

Its vital that everyone should be able to see this regardless of the speed of their connection.

Hi Pesi

I don't know the situation in Northern America, but in Europe satellite connections to the internet are usually better than xDSL.
Did you check with the satellite providers before saying the viewers can only access the Internet using slow satellite connections?

That's the problem - I don't know who the providers are and the viewers are spread out all over the North - I better do some research quick before next week.
