I'm exploring my streaming choices as I consider moving from UStream. I've successfully streamed several programs during my vMix evaluation period to UStream via vMix External Video Output --> Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder and the UStream-provided XML file defining an FMS/RTMP URL destination.

Google Hangout is pretty slick and, while its web interface easily recognizes the vMix external output video stream (without the need for AFMLE) it doesn't see the audio stream. It recognizes every other audio device on my system but not vMix.

Any thoughts about some setting I can adjust to get the audio device to be recognized by the Firefox/Google Hangout like it is by AFMLE?

That mirroring is for your convenience, when you're watching yourself on camera and attempting to gesture at something on-screen. :-)

You can disable that mirroring by adding an app called "Hangout Toolbox." In the first tab of Hangout Toolbox, is a button that reads [Mirror my own video]. Clicking that will flip the video back and forth.

Are you saying the vMix Video option does not show up in the list?
Make sure everything is setup and running in vMix before opening Google Hangouts and the video and audio should play correctly.

Thanks, Stephan. That was the final piece of the puzzle. I had played with Stereo Mix but didn't have everything connected together in a proper audio pipeline.

Okay. Here’s what I learned:

vMix, like many professional video editing packages, allows one to choose to which device audio is rendered. I have a half-dozen choices on my system, between USB headsets, HDMI capture cards, the Virtual Audio Cable I added, and the motherboard’s own sound card. As I’ve discovered, choosing my USB headset is a dead-end for audio. But the mother-board’s sound card is not.

vMix, itself, does not appear as an audio device to Hangouts. But, the Windows “Stereo Mix” device does. The virtual Stereo Mix device is a DirectSound output device and provides a means to record anything that streams to the mother-board’s sound card speaker output. By default, Windows does not activate the Stereo Mix but it is easily enabled via the Windows Recording Devices dialogue.

So, the steps to stream audio from vMix to Hangouts are;

• enable Windows Stereo Mix device;
• set vMix Audio Renderer to the Windows sound card speakers, and;
• start Hangouts and choose the Stereo Mix device.

Basically, the audio data flow looks like this:

vMix --> DirectSound Speakers --> Stereo Mix --> Hangouts

And, that’s it.

Whew!

Martin, it might be a good idea to add procedures for connecting vMix to other popular streaming channels to the help documentation.
