I see there is an external button between Record and Stream.

How do I connect a DVD Recorder or VCR to the computer and to vMix so I can record as an external recording device?

Thanks

Hi Zalek

this subject has been already discussed in the forum before.
Check this topic for example

It is doable but no a very good idea nowadays. You can get much better recordings internally with vMix

DVD recorder is a good idea though :) If you have a fast duplicator, there might be some business in selling dvd's of an event right after it finishes to the attendees.

The EXTERNAL button is mainly used to send the output to a "virtual device" which is useful to feed a third-party software like VLC for example.

But it allows also to send the signal to HDMI, SDI or Analog outputs through compatible hardware.

Check :

Is there a video on how to connect the VCR and BlackMagic to the external feature?

Is BlackMagic Shuttle USB 3.0 compatible with USB 2.0 ports?

we use External frequently to route into a BM mini-monitor card, to:
feed projectors
feed a BM VideoAssist recorder
feed modulators (to TV stations xmitters)
send virtual feeds to other programs, like Real Presence, Zoom, etc.

and almost always simultaneously record on vMix too.
thanks 1 user thanked HWL1223 for this useful post.

That's not my question. How do I connect a BlackMagic Shuttle USB to the DVD Recorder or VCR then use it in vMix External?

Is BlackMagic Shuttle USB 3.0 compatible with USB 2.0 Ports on a PC?

Sadly not. And it's not universally compatible with all USB3 ports either!

@ xzalek25

First off, I do not have the Intensity Shuttle, but rather just the Intensity Pro PCIe card, but they are similar in function.

I do not believe so. It's designed to use the Bandwidth of USB3.

I would suggest RCA Component cables.
The Intensity Shuttle should be recognized as a device in the drop down menu of "External Output / NDI" in Settings if External Renderer is activated there.
(If it doesn't show up there, it might not work IDK)
Following that, you need to turn on "External" button in the main UI.
What the above posters are basically saying is that vMix won't recognize your external recorder but rather the device that you are using to accept the "External Output" feed from vMix which needs to be a valid I/O device (such as the BM Intensity Shuttle or BM Mini-monitor but there are many others as well).

Hope that helps.

Will the Intensity Pro PCI work on a 2010 Dell Precision T3500 Workstation that has an ATX Extend Motherboard?

PCI or PCI express?

Anyway: if it has the right pci or pci express port, it will probably work. I don't think anyone here has that exact configuration, but I can't see any reason why it would not work :)

I know that ATX Extend Motherboards have PCI and PCI Express slots. However what voltage does the card have? That will tell me which slot to use.

Many have directed and given you help except I never read "this is what you do".

1. You need a way OUT of the computer - This can be an external box via USB or Thunderbolt or an internal card using PCI.
2. If you have an HDMI HD signal out you need a converter box from HD to SD as DVD recorders are SD.
3. Install the converter so that it works directly with your DVD recorder. The PC must have a working output before vMix will be able to use it.
4. The signal would be configured in vMix via the External button. Hit the Cog Pick your Output.
5. Once configured and working correctly(this is the issue I have most of the time) You press the EXTERNAL BUTTON and boom goes the dynamite vMix is being sent externally.
6. Now you Press record on your recorder and you are done.

Remember that SD is 4 times smaller than HD which is 4 times smaller than 4k so by math 4k is 16x the resolution of SD which is what a DVD burner is.
If you want to distribute the content after the show you can always record internally at a higher resolution and downrez in post, aka transcode to a smaller size.
Also if the goal is distribution Black Magic Design has an SD Multi Recorder(I think it does 24 at a time) for people doing HD content at shows.

Hope that helps and please let me know if you have any questions about what I am suggesting.
