Hi

I was looking at my Gigabyte P34 laptop and I noticed a port I hadn't noticed before. It's a USB-C port.

I did some quick googling and apparently it offers me some interesting possibilities. For example, apparently it's Thunderbolt compatible.

So with that in mind, how can I take advantage of this USB-C port with my vMix software.

For example, what hardware/camera options can I now consider adding to my mix.

I don't think I'd call USB 3.1 Type C as Thunderbolt compatible... it's still a USB 3 port.
Type C and the most recent thunderbolt do however share the same cabling, so there is no need to buy separate types of cables.

Are you sure you've got Thunderbolt? The specs on the Gigabyte website for the P34W don't mention Thunderbolt capability.

there is a lot of confusion about thunderbolt 3 and usb-c. usb-c is capable of 10 gbit/s and thunderbolt3 up to 40! so there is potential. I have used a thunderbolt2 camera input from blackmagic connected to a thunderbolt 3 to 2 converter. it works very well.

not sure if it would work on a usb-c port.

advantage of thunderbolt3 is that it allows for something like an external pcie cardholder to be attached. like the akitio thunder3. this allows to have up to 4 or even more inputs connected to that little connector. daisychaining two units even more inputs...

but it is still a lot of plug and test...

Indeed you are correct. No thunderbolt capability on this laptop.

It's arriving next week.

I'll let you know how it handles USB3 and how well vMix works with it.
