I have tried vMix on a setup where we had to combine 4 shots into one.
I have the Basic HD version so 4 layers are possible.
I found that when I adjust any setting like positioning an recorded take, (via the "i" button) the program becomes very sluggish. it takes 10s of seconds to react to any button or slider. even opening another recording can take up to a minute.
All the while, the CPU (quad core 3Ghz AMD) are between 5 and 20% per core.

While I succeeded to show the 4 shots combined, the whole process was very tedious and I need to find the cause.

Related issue: The fader does not move smoothly, it disappears when I drag it to one side, sometimes comes back (or not) or jumps back to left. It also can react sluggish.

What I found in during this composition shot is that the first frame of a clip that is shown in the lower row is often the first frame of the clip that was opened BEFORE!
so at one time I had 3 clips open that looked identical, but the moment I made a transition, the frame in the lower row updated to the real image.
That was very confusing because I started to search for clips that were already open but not recognizable.

I am open to all suggestions to improve this.

Hi Rob,

Sounds like some potential graphics card issues. What graphics card do you have installed and what version of Windows are you running?

Martin

Hi Martin,
Thanks for the quick reply.

I am using a Gigabyte GA-880GM-USB3, with the onboard GPU,
there is a 4 core 3Ghz CPU in there.
I am running W7 64bit Ultimate

I am hoping to use this for 1080i capture and playback.
The program looks very promising.

Unfortunately this motherboard has only 1 PCI-Express 16x lane that is occupied with the Decklink Duo card. the other PCI-Express is a 1x slot that can only fit very select cards, due to the onboard GPU build next to it.

When I first installed the program I used 2x Sony EX-3 cameras at 1080i/50 and I could record mjpeg without dropped frames.
But most of the work I do is with Arri Alexa cameras that output also 50i or 25p 1080. But now I see 4-7 dropped frames every second.
The info frame shows that the dropped frames are in the source stream, not in the CPU handling.

Could you let me know the specific model number of the CPU you are using?
This is so I can look up the GPU specs of that particular CPU and see if they are capable of mixing multiple HD sources.

Martin

After looking up some benchmarks for the AMD 880G it appears the performance is very low end even for integrated graphics.
This means it is probably not up to the task of running vMix in HD unfortunately, so you are probably looking at a motherboard upgrade with a dedicated card to get some decent performance.

Hope this helps,

Martin

Hi Martin,

for sure you made it clear that my MoBo is underweight..... That's cool, I can use this computer at home for normal video viewing, not for HD-specialty programs.

Than the next question is, where should I start now.
Due to the character of my work, which is live recording and playback on a film/HD set, I have to consider size and weight as well.

I prefer to use with micro-ATX sized boards because of the smaller case that can be fitted in a - still big - Pelican case, together with a LCD screen.
gigabyte has just come out with a dual Thunderbold MoBo, for i5/i7 processors.
Do I have to look into that direction?

any help appreciated here,

Thanks,

Rob

Hi Rob,

There are many Micro-ATX boards available that include 4 PCI-Express slots.
The graphics card usually takes up two of these but then the last two can be used for DeckLink cards.

In our lab we run the Asus P8Z77-M Pro with an ASUS GTX560 Graphics card and a DeckLink Quad capture card.

Martin

Ok, that sounds good.
And what about processor? I understand from your remarks that vMix does most of the processing via the GPU, so that is why you want to see a powerful graphic card or unit in the system.
Looking at my current PC, this morning I saw that simple opening a clip and playing back with a fade to another clip often peaks 2 cores to 90+% while the 2 others are around 35%
and in the bottom bar of vMix I sometimes see percentages far higher than 100%, up to 270%!

Any recommendation for a proper CPU?

For the GPU I see that you prefer nVidia, is that for some reason related to the vMix programming?

Thanks for your help Martin, I really appreciate the fast responses.

My guess is perhaps the low end graphics is emulating a lot of functionality in software causing high cpu usage.
Or perhaps there is some kind of fault somewhere.

I would recommend the Core i5 or Core i7 processors. The cheaper Core i5 are usually fine.
I only recommend nVidia because it is what we use internally but we also have ATI based test machines which work fine.

Martin
