I have a piece of software that I developed a couple years ago called InputMapper, it was designed primarily for video games allowing Playstation 4 controllers to be used on PC games where they were previously incompatible. For the last year or so I have been working on the latest version of the software that expands its usability to mapping any device to any other device (even emulated or virtual devices), playing around with it this morning I wrote a MIDI plugin and to my surprise it worked very well so I will likely keep actively developing this plugin for IM.

The benefits the software has in relation to vMix:
* MIDI protocol does not allow for device sharing, once a app hooks a device it has exclusive control and no other apps may connect. The InputMapper 2 application through the MIDI output plugin has the ability to emulate an unlimited (within reason) number of virtual [MIDI] devices, and as a core part of IM's functionality input device channels can be routed to as many output locations as desired.
* The creation of multiple virtual MIDI devices based on one device means multiple applications (vMix, sample player, PTZ camera) can all be connected to the same MIDI device at the same time.
* Tally lights and other feedback can be easily implemented if the controller supports feedback such as the AKAI APC series.
* Also would allow other devices to send or receive MIDI such as HID devices, remotes, game controllers, Arduino, etc.

The software as a whole is still in its development stages, but I will post here once it get closer to a usable state.

I am interested in some type of plugin that will allow me to color key my midi controllers with vmix such as the Novation Launchpad or some of the AKAI APC Pro or Mini. Will this help with that?

MIDI is not a standardized protocol when it comes to controllers, buttons and leds are send as notes, channels, velocities, none of which are labeled in any manner that makes sense to most devices. For this reason you need to find out what note/channel corresponds to each led. This can be found on Google, forums, sometimes it's in the manual, but not usually.

This is an example of what you would need to know, this is the layout of my APC 40

Looks interesting.
I'd love to beta test if you're interested.

I've got the original Novation launchpad, a Novation Launchkey mini, a Denon MC6000MK2, and a Numark DJ2GO.

I've found that the pads on the launchpad do not react the same as the pads on the Launchkey mini. Not sure why the pads and the keys can't be seen by vMix, but the knobs, and maybe 4 buttons are all vMix recognizes on the launchkey.
