Stream to Different Resolutions/Bitrates to Different CDN's

I regularly stream 720p and 180p to different CDN servers. My 720p stream goes to a Flash server in Washington, DC and my 180p stream to a HTML5 server in Kansas City. Currently I use either Wirecast or VidBlaster for the 180p stream and vMix for the 720p stream

Could the Streaming Setups modified to allow for mixed resolutions/bitrates and multiple CDN destinations?

- Tom

Hi Tom,

In the streaming window there are three buttons, [1], [2] and [3] you can use these to stream to three providers simultaneously.

Also, to provide a bit more information. Each of those three destinations/providers
can have a different bitrate set by ticking the 1,2,3 boxes within the quality settings.

Basically, there is three ways the vMix streaming can be used:

1. Multi bitrate to a single destination using the [1] button at the top and up to three bitrates in the quaility settings.
2. Single bitrate to up to three destinations using the [1],[2],[3] buttons and only the first bitrate selecting in quality settings.
3. Different bitrates to different destinations using the [1],[2],[3] buttons and then selecting different bitrates for each in quality settings.

The help goes into a bit more detail on the different options available:

Just having a few minutes to take a look at this.

I must be missing something.

I set Button 1 to Dacast in the top section (and select channel, etc) and then set the Quality in the lower section of this window to 720p @2.5Mbps
Then I set Button 2 to Custom RMTP Server and then set the Quality to 320x180 @ 300kbps.
Then I select Save. And the window closes.

When I reopen the window, the Button 1 settings in the bottom section now show the 320x180 @ 300kbps, not the 720p settings. I can save the the Button 1 settings and then save the Button 2 settings, but it still reverts to the lower section last setting.

What am I doing wrong?

Hi Tom,

The Quality settings are the same for all three buttons.
So you can use the second bitrate checkbox in the Quality window to assign a unique bitrate to stream 2.

The quality settings preset doesnt change when switching between 1 and 2 this is by design.
Note the grey dividing line, the 1,2,3 buttons configure settings above the line, everything below
(quality etc) are settings that cover all streams.

Okay. I get it, I think. Maybe not.

So, I can't stream to two different CDNs at different bit rates/resolutions. Is this correct?

My desire is...

Stream A - to CDN A at 720p 2.5Mbps plus audio only
Stream B - to CDN B at 180p 300kbps plus audio only

So, I'm confused. Can vMix do this or not? If yes, how? If not, this is my feature request.

Yes you can.

Setup the two different CDNs in [1] and [2].

Then go to Quality settings and select the two different bit rates in that single window.
There are three bit rates check the first two boxes and type in the bit rates you would like

Still confused...

How does vMix know that I want to send 720p @ 1.5 to one CDN and 180p @ 300 to another CDN?

Because the first bitrate (first line) is for [1] the second bitrate (line) is for [2]?

AHA!

Now I get it! Thank you r@wisla.

The Streaming Quality Window bit-rate settings at the top of window look almost exactly like the bit-rate settings section of the Video Settings section in FMLE. As usual, I was over-thinking this. A newby to streaming would have succeeded where I failed. I knew too much!

r@wisla, next time you're in Fairhope, Alabama, USA, the first pint is on me!

So sad that I can only give you a THANKS once!

I'm using restream.io if i have enough bandwidth to do a double stream. Until now they don't have the feature to stream to custom rtmp servers, but they promised to implemen in the near future.

It's a free service, and it saves you bandwidth :)

I cannot get 2 streams out to 2 different CDNs. I have to use Custom RTMP for each one.

1. Tab 1. Wowza. I put in the custom RTMP server settings.
2. Tab 2. Youtube. I select customer RTMP server settings but it keeps listing the Wowza ones.

How do you make this work? It would appear only 1 custom RTMP server configuration is allowed.
